This lesser three-toed woodpecker has lesser black feathers, a cream chest and a longish tail. It is chestnut stained and looks excited. It has a long narrow beak, perfect for drilling small holes into tree trunks. Its two most noticeable traits are its highly inquisitive nature and the fact that it makes remarkably loud noises when it drills for food.
