Toy growler

Toy growlers are small boxes sold in the Assemble-an-Animal shop in Bes Pelargic. They cost 12Rh 60s each. They allow you to have your assembled animal repeat one of four custom phrases. However, they are far more widely used to TM languages. They weigh 1/9 lb.

Setting up a growler

It makes most sense to have your growler set up either by someone with 90 levels of the spoken language you want, or the tongues ritual. While it's possible to TM languages from someone with less skill than you have, you can't TM from someone whose skill is more than ten levels lower than yours - so if you set up your own growler after learning the language, it would stop working in very short order.

It's also possible the imp that records messages might speak all languages perfectly, so you only need to speak a basic level of the language yourself.  research If this has been marked on a page, it's because there was something that probably isn't known, that the person who edited the page thinks could be found out. Perhaps you could figure this thing out, and be famous evermore.

Growlers can contain four messages of no more than 80 characters each. One is played when the growler's cord is "tug"ged. It's most efficient to fill your growler's limited capacity with strings of short words - three or four characters. In these examples, the last word is longer in order to completely fill the growler's 80-character capacity:

zzz zuz zax zek job jow zap zep zip jib jam coz biz fez fiz wiz jab jaw jug cats

jive jagg zeks jupe fuze putz hazy koji zinc futz juba zerk joco jube quip quill

There is a room north of the Assemble-an-Animal shop where you can record your messages. You need to "insert" the box into the machine, speak the language you want to record in, then "press record button" before saying your message, and then saying "yes" or "no" to confirm recording.

Note that you need to press the record button before each of the four messages you record, or the imp won't pay attention to you.

> perform tongues
It seems slightly easier to perform tongues because you are near a proper party.
You kneel and spread your arms in benediction.
You pray for the Apostles' Gift.
Loudly now, you chant the names of Hat in the many languages of the Discworld.
You humbly request the power to spread Hat's Word.
The buzzing conversations in your head rise to new levels of volume and complexity.
> speak klatchian
Now using Klatchian for speaking and writing.
> insert growler box into slot
You insert a toy growler into the slot.
A rather muffled voice comes from inside the slot with a Bes Pelargic accent: Ouch! Alright then, press the record button and I'll know to start paying attention.
> press record button
You press the record button.
A rather muffled voice comes from inside the slot with a Bes Pelargic accent: I'm ready. Say whatever you'd like me to memorise.
> 'zzz zuz zax zek job jow zap zep zip jib jam coz biz fez fiz wiz jab jaw jug cats
You say in Klatchian: zzz zuz zax zek job jow zap zep zip jib jam coz biz fez fiz wiz jab jaw jug cats
A rather muffled voice comes from inside the slot with a Bes Pelargic accent: "zzz zuz zax zek job jow zap zep zip jib jam coz biz fez fiz wiz jab jaw jug cats"? Is that right?
> 'yes
You say in Klatchian: yes
A rather muffled voice comes from inside the slot with a Bes Pelargic accent: Got it, I have no idea what it means but I will remember it always.
> press eject button
You press the eject button.
A rather muffled voice comes from inside the slot with a Bes Pelargic accent: Finished? Good, I can go back to ignoring you.
The toy growler slides out of the slot and you take it.

Using the growler

In order to have the growler play back a message, simply "tug cord on growler". If you have more than one, "tug cord on growlers" to have them all say something. You can use as many as you like - two will TM rather slowly, whereas four will TM at roughly the same rate as hearing the language spoken around you. The more growlers, however, the more people GP you need to hear what they all say - so there's unlikely to be much benefit from piling them up past this point.

> tug cord on growlers
You tug the cord on two toy growlers.
A squeaky voice comes from one of the toy growlers in Klatchian: lahfib buzz fizz fuzz hajj su'utsi rain juju haits thifib miits jeux jinx jock jack sleek
A squeaky voice comes from one of the toy growlers in Klatchian: fibts zuz zax bit job jow zap zep liaf jib jam dits xits fez hrats wa'ats jab lahw bluv kazh

Caveats

Don't be a spammy git

In theory, you could TM using only one growler, which repeats one of its four messages every time you tug the cord.  research If this has been marked on a page, it's because there was something that probably isn't known, that the person who edited the page thinks could be found out. Perhaps you could figure this thing out, and be famous evermore.  This is because, in order to TM a language, you only need to hear or read something which is different from the last thing you heard or read in that language, which you don't completely understand. Using more growlers at once gives you more material to listen to, and so a better chance of TMing - but it also produces an antisocial level of spam. It's best to do this where you won't disturb other players.

Don't sit in one spot tugging on your growler over and over, hoping for TMs

This is probably the worst thing you could do with a growler. You're likely to burn through your people GP almost right away, and you can't TM without it. You're also far more likely to TM while you're using other skills. Instead, go about your day - fighting, idling or whatever you do - and pause to use the growler at regular intervals, when you have full GP. This is far less boring, unproductive and inefficient.
