Tarnach's Quality Consumables

Tarnach's Quality Consumables is a player shop run and maintained for the purpose of providing spell components for the magical fraternity. It is located in the north-east corner on the second level of the Magical Emporium in Sator Square in Ankh-Morpork.

This is a list of components usually stocked in Tarnach's. This is not a comprehensive list.

Employment

Players can go to Tarnach's and apply for a job. Managers will then vote on the application of each applicant. If an applicant does not have more than 50% of positive votes, their application will be declined, and they may not reapply within a certain period. Once an applicant receives more than 50% of positive votes, he should return to the shop and confirm his employment within a specified period. He will then be placed on a waiting list if there are no vacancies, or will be hired immediately.

Employee records and activity are monitored and stored for the purposes of promotion, demotion or dismissal.

Employees are paid directly into a nominated bank account at the beginning of each month. This pay is based on the amount of work they have done during that month. They also receive a monthly bonus, determined by the amount of money in the bonus fund that month. Employees must claim their bonus during the same month that it has been awarded, as unclaimed bonuses are added to the following month's fund.

Promotion, demotion and dismissal

Employees are allocated points for the amount of work they do. These points are accumulated towards a target for promotion. Upon having sufficient points, and assuming there is a vacancy at the higher level, the employee is promoted. This will happen unless the employee has requested not to be promoted. Once an employee reaches management, they cannot be promoted further. They do have the option to retire at that stage, still having access to the shop but taking no further operational role within it.

Employees are monitored for inactivity. They will receive a warning if there has been no activity from them after a certain time. The next stage is either demotion for supervisors/managers, or dismissal for employees. Managers can override this at any time by placing employees on leave.

Reviews and employee history

Daily review

This review is conducted every (RL) day and is responsible for promotions, automatic demotions, inactivity warnings, updating the lists of people banned from the shop and declined applicants, and finally, checking if any applicants can be hired.

Monthly review

This review is conducted every (DW) month to pay employees, and allocate the bonus.

Employee history

Every employee has their record maintained from the moment of their initial application, to leaving employment. This is intended to facilitate the managers' job when deciding on personnel issues. It records every warning, promotion, demotion etc. and is accessible to managers for up to 3 months after an employee leaves the shop.
