It seems to be possible to convert silk threads to cotton threads by winding them up onto spools again (just bugrepped it):

> pull thread from spool
You pull a tan silk thread from the thread spool.
> l thread
This is a tan silk thread, useful for embroidery and repairing clothes.
> wind thread onto spool
You wind a tan silk thread onto your thread spool.
> pull thread from spool
You pull a tan cotton thread from the thread spool.
> l thread
This is a tan cotton thread, useful for embroidery and repairing clothes.
> pull thread from spool
You pull a tan cotton thread from the thread spool.

It not only converts the single thread you used before, but also the rest of the spool (except possibly the last one). The reverse process does not work, cotton threads do not turn into silk threads.
