Please wait for permission before deleting ANYTHING from the current Status page. If you are moving information from the current Status page to here, please use the horizontal line to separate incidents of downtime by the amount of time down, not by days alone - i.e, should the game be down from April 18 to the 21, then that is one block rather than four.

If there is scheduled maintenance the MUD status should show on this page: http://www.brist.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/dwstatus.html

The announcement:

Bulletin Boards: Announcements
Downtime later today
Note #10 by Tique at Mon Apr 19 16:25:21 2010 on board announcements

Tubul is having some hardware problems at the moment. We don't expect this to affect the MUD's performance for now, but as it affects other parts of the system, this might not remain the case.

There will be downtime later today of an hour or two at approx. 9pm UK time to allow a clean shutdown and some hardware shuffling. We apologise for the inconvenience!

Still (x3) down. -- Helaena 07:32, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

Assuming that Sojan has real work to do today (Tuesday 20th April) and given that whatever problem prevented the mud rebooting last night was not resolved before he went to bed last night, I think it's reasonable to assume at this point that the MUD is unlikely to be back until sometime this evening (UK time) at the earliest. Zexium 09:45, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

MUD still down, though the website proudly proclaims "It Works!" Medders 14:48, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

"Server: up. Maintenance: completed." Situation normal: all fucked up. -- Eucalypta 20 April 2010

Yes, I did say above that The status web page mentioned above was not updated for this maintenance event! Sojan didn't use the server status page for this maintenanace outage, so as he never switched it over to "server down for maintenance," the fact that it still says "server up" is meaningless! The fact the apache server is up suggests that at least some of the hardware is working, but I don't know if the apache server is on the same hardware as the mud these days. major problem with some network stuff at DW HQ. unfortunately am in austria until sat with limited net access. trying to fix remotely on phone with tique an others but is taking time. may not be possible until return to uk.

Jake.

Okey dokey - thanks to a very permissive terminal in an internet cafe and a lot of help from Tique and a very expensive international data/call bill we should hopefully now be back. I have had to seriously hack around to make this work however as the network instability is still in the background so please bear that in mind as I will need to sort this mess out eventually when I get back

I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say "thanks" for all your remote efforts, even if they don't let us play the proper mud. At least we have a backup to socialise and chat on.

Frazyl 21:52, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

Server State seems to be that of one week ago, anything that occurs on that server will not be carried over to the actual MUD once reopened.

Mirako 18:44, 7 January 2011 (MST)United States

Website is down again, could that mean repair has started?

EDIT: When it first went offline, the server would connect, and not display the webpage/MUD/any data. Now, it won't connect, indicating either that the website is indeed down for repair, or that it is suffering even more problems. (first option seems both more desirable and more likely).

Ladon 12:52, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

yes am home and working on it.

Sojan 19:00, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

The server and website have been down for far over 24 hours at this point. My withdrawal symptoms are getting pretty bad...I really hope Sojan or someone has been working on it!

Ouizardus 21:09, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

No, they haven't; whatever outage you're experiencing is specific to you, I'm afraid. --Chat 21:21, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
You were right, thank you for letting me know! All weekend without the Disc just because my ISP is dumb. Arg. --Ouizardus 16:20, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

Has the Disc gone down in the past hour, or is my ISP being stupid again? Can someone please confirm?

Ouizardus 17:49, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Disc and website are both currently operational. --Chat 18:03, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks again, Chat. Ugh, traceroute (tracert) shows my requests are getting lost after hitting ge-4-1-113.subs.dsl1.kp-leeds.zen.net.uk [62.3.85.182]. I presume my ISP is working on it, but I can't help but wonder how they could fix such a routing issue. --Ouizardus 23:02, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
Doing a traceroute also ends at 62.3.85.182 and I can log into the mud, so I don't think that's the problem.
Did you try using the ip address to connect to the mud instead of the name? Put 82.68.167.69 as the address and you can try either port 23 or 4242. Using the ip address would bypass dns problems while changing the port might help if the isp is messing around with port blocks or something. --Frazyl 19:18, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
I always use the IP address to connect, so it can't be DNS. I suspect something very odd is going on with my ISP. For example, right now, I'm connected to the MUD just fine, but tracert says that the route dies before it even leaves my city, let along gets to the UK! Also, I can't bring up the DW website...again, even though I am current connected to the MUD. *sigh* Why can't it just work? :-s --Ouizardus 22:57, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
Well if the website doesn't work that does sound like a dns issue... You can try to add the line in your host file:
82.68.167.69 discworld.atuin.net
You can't just use the ip for the website because it doesn't find the virtual host or something.
Or maybe it's also something else that's just really weird! :( --Frazyl 02:50, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

Offline? --Ilde 05:46, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

Seems the Disc is down and out. Maintance, or just some silly European routers breaking? --Xorphitus 23:19, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

Yes, hopefully this is the "4/13" work predicted in the recent 'advance warning' note. We can hope. Meanwhile we can do things like talk to our families or something. Maybe I'll do some laundry. Coyote 23:46, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I'm assuming this is the 13th April 00:00 / 06:00 ADSL line engineering work that we were warned about a week ago. --Zexium 23:48, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

Anyone thought to note the ipv6 address for the mud? It was specified that that one would still work. --Frazyl 00:57, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Ok, dug up the goggle cache for Getting Started but it only shows a domain name which doesn't resolve on ipv6. --Frazyl 02:21, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

IPv6 address is discworld6.obsidian.org.uk _or_ 2a01:348:19e:2::2 if the DNS plays silly buggers, which it might. The line has been out for ever so slightly longer than they promised [they said 15 minutes, we have 6 hours ...] but as it stands theres nada I can do about that save complain to the ISP.

Sojan Sojan 06:27, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

I can't stand the tension, i've ironed, done the washing, booked the car service, filed and even read about IPv6...not that i can understand how to connect. Make it come back Cyclo220.244.72.228 07:03, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Using IPv6 isn't that hard, the easiest way is probably using teredo/miredo, which should be in w7 and windows vista enabled by default (there's a basic guide at http://pugio.net/2007/07/howto-enable-ipv6-the-teredo-w.html , you can check your ipv6 connection at https://test-ipv6.com/ and if it works, connect to discworld using 2a01:348:19e:2::2 address. Oza. 89.102.35.139 07:51, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
  • sigh* looks like we have a BT screwup - this could take a while. IPv6 is your friend!

Sojan 07:56, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Great, the test shows I am ipv6-compatible, but both my browser and mushlient refuse to resolve the odd looking ip-address. Seems I take a further break then and hope noone died and lost inventory during the extended lockout...--Xorphitus 08:06, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Your browser should [but the in browser client doesn't sadly] but mushclient doesn't support it as I understand. If you can bear naked telnet then putty is the way to go - I'm sure other clients support it as well.

To use the IPv6 address within most browsers you;d need to enclose it in square brackets, so

http://[2a01:348:19e:2::2]/

Be warned however that the webpages aren't really ipv6 friendly atm and will keep trying to direct you to the ipv4 address - to get to the boards you'd need to put in

http://[2a01:348:19e:2::2]/lpc/secure/boards.c

Current News Item

Latest News Posted at Wed Apr 13 Title: line instability

as a result of the changes that caused the outage there may be a period of instability as the DSL lie has been migrated to BT 21CN and as such it;s going through a retraining phase to work out it;s new noise margins.

As a result expect some disconnections over the next 24-72 hours whilst it sorts itself out. Sadly there is little that can fix this save using ipv6. I shall get some guides up on that as soon as I am able.

Finally my browser understands ipv6 and I can read the boards, so I thought I could get the MUD connection via the flashclient. It loads but cannot resolve the ip of the MUD as well :-( That would have been neat! Don't know if that would be a near usage to enable the flash player to run under ipv6 --Xorphitus 13:57, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

No it's everyone - it's always worth readong the news announcements on the mud. The adslmax 10 day period comes to an end tonight so hopefully it will go away. If not there is a certain ISP helpdesk that is going to be suffering.

The problem last night was caused by an experimental modem firmware that caused the entire router to stop forwarding traffic - I have, of course, backed that out.

Sojan 10:19, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

I'm now doing fault finding - the muds connection on both ipv4 and ipv6 will be extremely unstable until 5pm.

Sojan 13:03, 23 April 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the info, Sojan. --Liane 13:18, 23 April 2011 (UTC)

I suspect BT are doing their investigation/repairs right now since the line is hard down [not that they've told me this btw, just that this is the time window they said they would come visit me in].

I'll let you know when they're done [once again assuming they tell me!]

Sojan 07:25, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

BT are now reporting problem solved - the line certainly seems a lot cleaner but I need to let it run for a while to be sure. I also need to recable it in to the internal cabling at some point today so there may still be an up and down or two today but then we're done hopefully.
