Sotto Voce is a priest ritual that tells you where someone or something is, for a little while.

Performing

This ritual costs 110 GP, and is performed on a living thing in the same room, or on an object. It is pk-checked.

It requires the powers of speech and movement.

Effect

For a short time, you will get periodic updates telling you the room the target is in. If the target is an item that's now in someone's inventory, you'll also be told who is carrying it.

For objects in a room:

You hear a faint voice in your head: Roywyn!  It's the small leather shield.  I'm currently in the same room as you.
You hear a faint voice in your head: Roywyn!  It's the small leather shield.  I'm currently in the garden.

For objects in someone's inventory:

You hear a faint voice in your head: Roywyn!  It's the lightable torch.  I'm currently being carried by you.
You hear a faint voice in your head: Roywyn!  It's the lightable torch.  I'm currently being carried by a poor tramp in the same room as you.
You hear a faint voice in your head: Roywyn!  It's the lightable torch.  I'm currently being carried by a poor tramp in the northwestern corner of the west bazaar.

For people:

A creepy voice whispers into your mind: "farmer is currently at eastern Lettuce Lane, south of Djelibeybi bazaar."
An angry voice whispers into your mind: "farmer is with you."

If it's too dark for you to see--regardless of the light level in the room where the target is--then you'll be told that their location is "something" instead of the name of the room.

Duration

Performing the ritual again on an item still under its effects will have no effect--the duration is measured from the time of the first performance, and subsequent ones are ignored.

Wearing off

It looks like this when the ritual wears off: For an item in someone's inventory:

The lightable torch tells you: Fine.  If you don't want to track me down, I'm staying with a poor tramp.

For an item in a room:

The small leather shield tells you: I'm hoarse from shouting for you.  If you still want me, I'm in the garden.

For a living thing:

The farmer's voice whispers one final time, "I am at the centre of the west bazaar" before going silent forever.

If it's an item in your inventory, you won't get a special wearing-off message.

Wards

A Sotto Voce ward, when triggered, will inform you where the warded item is. It triggers when a corpse containing the item is moved.
