Minimum Intuition for combat

With 14 Int, you will get this message when asking your horse to assist in combat:

You ask Horsie the buckskin horse to assist you in combat, but she looks like she doesn't have the intuition to do that.

Performing Soothing Rain and Restore on a recently-Raised horse (neither cures Raise Illness), then testing Aggro Rits on another NPK's horse, And Owner PFGs their own horse.

[Rez_sick] Ryuto: hello~
[Rez_sick] QiYing: really hoping horses won't park here

[King's Down]
It is night and the full moon is hidden by the clouds.
King's Down continues to the north and continues to the south.
A number of people pass by as they go about their lives (or in some cases, existences).
It is a damn cold backspindlewinter's night with slight breezes and dense cloud cover.
There are two obvious exits: north and south.

Bat'leth the giant fruitbat is flying and Ryuto L'Reaux, Minister BeastEater, a young truffle pig, a backward walking sheep, Haize, the ghost of a blood bay horse and Wise Arturos are standing here.

A street lamp is emitting a grimy light here.

[Rez_sick] Ryuto: wait, are we trying to kill a horse?
[Rez_sick] QiYing: Beasteaster please go ahead and Raise Dead on horse
[Rez_sick] Arturos: No that's just my thing
[Rez_sick] QiYing: then Haize assesses its condition

Minister BeastEater gestures at the open air.
Minister BeastEater looks expectant.
Minister BeastEater glows with a soft light, which slowly transfers onto ghost of a blood bay horse.
A blood bay horse appears in more solid form.

Haize assesses the state of the blood bay horse.

[Rez_sick] QiYing: then Haize assesses "assess horse health" after
Ryuto L'Reaux pets the blood bay horse.
The blood bay horse licks Ryuto L'Reaux benevolently on the back of the neck.
You cheer enthusiastically.
Haize assesses the state of the blood bay horse.

l horse
This blood bay mare has a rich red body with a black muzzle, eartips, mane, legs and tail, like the markings of a fox. She is of the Llamedos pony breed, which is known for high docility, decent vitality and strength and poor speed and intuition.
She is in good shape.
She is standing.
Cheerful Moth Friend drifts soothingly near your cranium.

[Rez_sick] Ryuto: ooh, shared
[Rez_sick] QiYing: how's it? res illness
[Rez_sick] Haize: Res sickness, nothing else

You hold a white cane in your left hand.
QiYing L'Reaux will try Soothing Rain first!
QiYing L'Reaux thinks Soothing Rain will fail

perform soothing rain from sora
You find it much more difficult to perform soothing rain because you are using the white cane as an external focus for the ritual. However, this is partially mitigated by the fact that you are near a stylish place and you feel comfortable in your stylish clothes.

You start to recite a devotional prayer to Gapp under your breath.
You call upon Gapp to provide a soothing rain to wash away the cares of the people.
You hold your Taffeny high and cry out for Gapp to infuse the clouds with healing power.
It starts to lightly sprinkle with snow.
QiYing L'Reaux thinks Soothing Rain will fail to restore rez illness.

Gentle snow drifts down from the clouds above you.
Haize assesses the state of the blood bay horse.

[Rez_sick] Haize: Still res sickness, by the way

Gentle snow drifts down from the clouds above you.
Haize assesses the state of the blood bay horse.
As quickly as it arrived, the snow ceases and the clouds fade away.

[Rez_sick] QiYing: how's the horse?
[Rez_sick] Arturos: Res sekness
[Rez_sick] Haize: It needs moar fibre in its diet. Although probably not if it's going to be dead again soon
[Rez_sick] Ryuto: ooh, needs both oats and hay
[Rez_sick] QiYing: Soothing Rain is over

[Rez_sick] QiYing: now to try Restore...

perform restore on horse from sora
You cannot perform restore because the blood bay horse is not in need of restoration.

[Rez_sick] BeastEater: before you kill it, may i try visions?
[Rez_sick] QiYing: "You cannot perform restore because the blood bay horse is not in need of restoration."
[Rez_sick] QiYing: oooh

perform restore on horse from sora
You cannot perform restore because the blood bay horse is not in need of restoration.

[Rez_sick] QiYing: can't restore the horse!
[Rez_sick] QiYing: Haize, how's the horse?

Haize assesses the state of the blood bay horse.
[Rez_sick] Haize: Res sick
[Rez_sick] QiYing: Only Doughtnut Jim can do that
[Rez_sick] BeastEater: ill try once they are done

[Rez_sick] QiYing: Only Doughtnut Jim can heal Ress illness as far as I know
[Rez_sick] QiYing: witches can't do it, Fraz said
[Rez_sick] Ryuto: really... huh.

[Rez_sick] Arturos: Any other tests?
[Rez_sick] Arturos: Or can we start the kinds of testing that gets us protestors?
[Rez_sick] QiYing: Ryuto saw his horse healed of rez illness at Doughtnut Jim's

[Rez_sick] QiYing: i have the data I want, please test away :p
Haize assesses the state of the blood bay horse.
[Rez_sick] Haize: Healthy horse
[Rez_sick] Haize: No
[Rez_sick] Ryuto: needs food badly, though
[Rez_sick] Arturos: Go ahead Beasteater :)
[Rez_sick] Haize: Skillfail
[Rez_sick] Haize: Yes
[Rez_sick] Haize: Res sick still

[Rez_sick] BeastEater: unable
[Rez_sick] QiYing: ah
[Rez_sick] Haize: Should we get it some hay? Else it's going to get other sicknesses too
[Rez_sick] Arturos: Do you need me to do a thing to let you do it or did you just want to see if you can try?
[Rez_sick] QiYing: they wanna keel it :p
[Rez_sick] Arturos: That's ok Haize. I'll demonstrate my cure all
[Rez_sick] Haize: Oh dear :)
[Rez_sick] Ryuto: hoo boy
[Rez_sick] BeastEater: all my aggressive rits are unable, must be pk checked
[Rez_sick] Arturos: Yup
[Rez_sick] Arturos: I found the same with aggro spells on other peoples horses

Wise Arturos gets one cured carrot from his violaceous purple denim pack.

Wise Arturos wiggles his eyebrows around a bit.

Wise Arturos sets fire to the carrot.
The carrot floats up and hovers above the blood bay horse.
Wise Arturos puts a lightable torch in his violaceous purple denim pack.

Wise Arturos studies a blood bay horse.
Nine fire bunnies leap out of the ground and throw themselves at the blood bay horse.

Wise Arturos gets a darkened cardboard knife from a black silk garter.
Wise Arturos slashes at the air with a knife, leaving behind an ominous-looking rip.
Wise Arturos drones a string of words that no earthly throat should be able to pronounce.

Wise Arturos pulls a small black demon out of the rip in the air, and flicks it at a blood bay horse.
Eight fire bunnies leap out of the ground and throw themselves at the blood bay horse.
Wise Arturos stares in sick fascination at the demon as it flies towards a blood bay horse.

Seven fire bunnies leap out of the ground and throw themselves at the blood bay horse.

The blood bay horse stiffens and then contorts in terror.
Wise Arturos moves aggressively towards the blood bay horse!
Wise Arturos sheathes the darkened cardboard knife in the black silk garter.
Six fire bunnies leap out of the ground and throw themselves at the blood bay horse.
Wise Arturos studies a blood bay horse.
Five fire bunnies leap out of the ground and throw themselves at the blood bay horse.

The blood bay horse is slightly hurt.
Wise Arturos studies a blood bay horse.

Four fire bunnies leap out of the ground and throw themselves at the blood bay horse.
Wise Arturos studies a blood bay horse.

[Rez_sick] Haize: Doesn't have much of a self preservation instinct

Three fire bunnies leap out of the ground and throw themselves at the blood bay horse.
[Rez_sick] QiYing: fire bunnies do good
Wise Arturos studies a blood bay horse.
You grin at Haize.

Two fire bunnies leap out of the ground and throw themselves at the blood bay horse.
[Rez_sick] Haize: You'd think it'd run away

A fire bunny leaps out of the ground and throws itself at the blood bay horse.
Wise Arturos studies a blood bay horse.
The fiery carrot above the blood bay horse's head flickers and goes out.

You agree with Haize wholeheartedly.
Wise Arturos wrinkles his face in disgust.
Wise Arturos points at a blood bay horse.

Haize assesses the state of the blood bay horse.
Wise Arturos sets fire to the carrot.

The carrot floats up and hovers above the blood bay horse.
Wise Arturos puts a lightable torch in his violaceous purple denim pack.

Wise Arturos ponders.
Eleven fire bunnies leap out of the ground and throw themselves at the blood bay horse.
Haize assesses the state of the blood bay horse.

[Rez_sick] Arturos: Anyone wanna see a horse plummet from the sky?

Ten fire bunnies leap out of the ground and throw themselves at the blood bay horse.
Nine fire bunnies leap out of the ground and throw themselves at the blood bay horse.

[Rez_sick] Haize: Oh deary me

[Rez_sick] BeastEater: ok, i wont heal it this time
Minister BeastEater says in Morporkian with a Djelian accent: ok, i wont heal it this time

Eight fire bunnies leap out of the ground and throw themselves at the blood bay horse.
[Rez_sick] Haize: That would be one way to kill it

Six fire bunnies leap out of the ground and throw themselves at the blood bay horse.
Minister BeastEater grins.
Wise Arturos tweaks Minister BeastEater's nose.
Six fire bunnies leap out of the ground and throw themselves at the blood bay horse.
Five fire bunnies leap out of the ground and throw themselves at the blood bay horse.

[Rez_sick] Arturos: Plummeting doesn't kill! It just breaks legs

Four fire bunnies leap out of the ground and throw themselves at the blood bay horse.
Three fire bunnies leap out of the ground and throw themselves at the blood bay horse.

[Rez_sick] Haize: And puts it on 1hp?

Two fire bunnies leap out of the ground and throw themselves at the blood bay horse.
The blood bay horse leaves south.

[Rez_sick] QiYing: except Arturos' horse walked on broken legs, Haize
[Rez_sick] Arturos: It did :P

[Rez_sick] Haize: So, get it some fleas and drop it out of the sky?

[Rez_sick] Arturos grins

Wise Arturos leaves south.
Wise Arturos arrives from the south.

[Rez_sick] Haize: Yeah, but it'd regain health whilst it's unconscious I guess?

[Rez_sick] Arturos: Where'd it go?
Wise Arturos leaves south.

Haize looks around.
There is a sudden white flash around Ryuto L'Reaux.
Bat'leth the giant fruitbat flaps her wings.
Ryuto L'Reaux looks around.

[Rez_sick] QiYing: The blood bay horse leaves south.

King's Down, outside a busy, brisk-looking shop [n,sw,e].
The ghost of a blood bay horse, Wise Arturos, a watchman and a poor beggar are standing here.
A street lamp is emitting a grimy light here and the corpse of a blood bay horse is on the ground.

[Rez_sick] Arturos: Wooh
Wise Arturos draws the darkened cardboard knife from the black silk garter into his left hand.

[Rez_sick] Haize: How long does res sickness seem to last?

[Rez_sick] QiYing: 3 s

Wise Arturos gets the head of a blood bay horse from the decapitated corpse of a blood bay horse.
[Rez_sick] Ryuto: oh wow

Wise Arturos gets a horse neck from the decapitated corpse of a blood bay horse.
Ryuto L'Reaux arrives from the north.
[Rez_sick] QiYing: it dead
[Rez_sick] Arturos: So who wants to come make sausages?
Minister BeastEater arrives from the north.

Wise Arturos starts to sketch a door in the air with his finger.
The lines Wise Arturos sketched in the air start to glow a red colour.
A strange green smell escapes from the forming door and slowly wisps its way around the room.
The door slowly starts to materialise.

[Rez_sick] BeastEater: i can do some
Minister BeastEater says in Morporkian with a Djelian accent: i can do some

Wise Arturos dances and capers madly around the door, throwing bizarre coloured bits of power into it and chanting strange and obscure lyrics.
A mysterious stone door solidifies with a satisfying thump.

[Rez_sick] QiYing: we will not know for the moment cos it dead :p
[Rez_sick] Ryuto: I can try to help

[Rez_sick] QiYing: ok experiment over... so feel free to leave if you wanna :p
[Rez_sick] QiYing: thanks all :P

Illnesses

Overweight

From Mounts page: "Horses fed too often might become sick though. It is unclear if this is above 100% of needs or at a lower percentage or if it's when feeding them things other than hay & oats."

My horse was diagnosed as overweight and had never been fed anything but hay and oats. I had however fed it a LOT of hay and oats before I was able to assess its needs. Emily (talk) 12:24, 5 April 2021 (EDT)

Traits

My mount is a Chalk pony. I had my horse's traits checked and they are as follows:

Vitality .................. 24
Speed ..................... 50 ++
Intuition ................. 16 --
Strength .................. 39
Docility .................. 91

Both my horses traits and the horses traits listed on the main page add up to exactly 220. They also both have a trait with ++ and a trait with --

I would like to therefore put forward the theory that every horse has 220 trait points and that for a trait to go up another trait must go down.

This is done by using your horse in a certain manner and therefore training it in the used trait and detraining it an unused trait.

The only exception is docility which does not change based on horse training and can only be adjusted at the stables via a retro.

If anyone has checked their horses traits and they do not add up to 220 please can you update this research note (to prove me incorrect)!

Toffee (talk) 23:21, 6 April 2021 (GMT)

I had my traits checked again (it had been a few days) and some have gone up, some have gone down but they still add up to 220.

Vitality .................. 23
Speed ..................... 54
Intuition .................. 3
Strength .................. 49
Docility .................. 91

Toffee (talk) 00:06, 7 April 2021 (GMT)

The more expensive, less docile horses are actually 230 trait points, instead of 220. Example:

The black horse:
  Vitality .................. 18
  Speed ..................... 23
  Intuition ................. 86
  Strength .................. 54
  Docility .................. 49
230
While called black, this black gelding's coat is actually a deep, dark brown, bleached by exposure to the sun. It is of the Munz charger breed, which is known for high intuition, decent strength and docility and poor vitality and speed.

The blue roan horse:
  Vitality .................. 73
  Speed ..................... 60
  Intuition ................. 18
  Strength .................. 28
  Docility .................. 51
230
This blue roan gelding's deep brown, almost black, coat is intermixed with a speckling of white hairs around its body, giving it a silvery brown appearance. It is of the Sum Dim horse breed, which is known for high vitality, decent speed and docility and poor intuition and strength.

The dapple grey horse:
  Vitality .................. 45
  Speed ..................... 18
  Intuition ................. 21
  Strength .................. 51
  Docility .................. 85
220
This dapple grey gelding's copper brown coat is dappled with starry white spots around its body and legs. It is of the Llamedos pony breed, which is known for high docility, decent vitality and strength and poor speed and intuition.

The dark horse:
  Vitality .................. 24
  Speed ..................... 24
  Intuition ................. 47
  Strength .................. 48
  Docility .................. 77
220
This dark gelding has a deep brown, almost black coat with white "socks" on its feet and white markings around its muzzle. It is of the D'reg warpony breed, which is known for high docility, decent intuition and strength and poor vitality and speed.

The dun horse:
  Vitality .................. 23
  Speed ..................... 18
  Intuition ................. 80
  Strength .................. 28
  Docility .................. 71
220
This dun gelding's coat is a creamy tan all over with a slightly darker shade on its mane and tail and faint striped markings on its legs. It is of the Pumpkin pony breed, which is known for high intuition and docility and poor vitality, speed and strength.

Horses regen

So someone killed the horses and Prinscilla.

Might as well document a fresh batch of horses.

What I find very very worrying is that the more costly breeds of horses seem to almost never spawn and that where there's one it's often old player mounts.

--Frazyl (talk) 12:24, 14 May 2021 (EDT)

Prinscilla arrives from the east.
Prinscilla leaves for a moment and comes back with a rose grey horse, a brown horse, a bay horse, a liver chestnut horse and a skewbald horse following her.

Walked in and there was a fresh spawn of Prinscilla and her horses. Unfortunately, on an alt that needs better horse skills but perhaps still some useful information can be gleaned.

You close the east door.
Prinscilla arrives from the east.
Prinscilla leaves for a moment and comes back with a grey horse, a dapple grey horse, a sorrel horse, a black horse and a blue roan horse following her.

l mounts
This blue roan mare's deep brown, almost black, coat is intermixed with a speckling of white hairs around her body, giving her a silvery brown appearance. She is of the Il Drim dreamhorse breed, which is known for high speed, decent intuition and docility and poor vitality and strength.
She is in good shape.
She is standing.
While called black, this black mare's coat is actually a deep, dark brown, bleached by exposure to the sun. She is of the Al-Khalian horse breed, which is known for decent vitality, speed, strength and docility and poor intuition.
She is in good shape.
She is standing.
This sorrel mare's coat is a reddish tan all over with a slightly lighter shade on her mane and tail. She is of the Chalk pony breed, which is known for high docility, decent speed and strength and poor vitality and intuition.
She is in good shape.
She is standing.
This dapple grey mare's ash grey coat is dappled with starry white spots around her body and legs. She is of the Chalk pony breed, which is known for high docility, decent speed and strength and poor vitality and intuition.
She is in good shape.
She is standing.
While called grey, this grey mare is actually what most people would call a white horse. However, her skin under the white coat, visible around her eyes and muzzle, is black. She is of the Copperhead mining pony breed, which is known for high docility, decent vitality and intuition and poor speed and strength.
She is in good shape.
She is standing.

Breeds

Traits default values

I have a theory that the three breed trait categories are the following. Because 1/3 each. Data seems to strongly converge on this so far.

  • poor 0-33
  • decent 34-66
  • high 67-100

But I'm still adding new horses because the extremes are less clear, it might possibly never actually go below 11 or above 90 or other such magic numbers and exact changeover numbers might be off by one.

Traits change limits

There is definitely a hard cap on how high/low you can make a stat go when training a horse, based on the breed's characteristics. I only have the one horse I've been training so far, but I seem to have hit multiple caps. She's a Chalk pony, so these are for the 220-trait breeds. The 230-trait breeds might have different caps?

  • Poor: bottomed out at 0, topped out at 40
  • Decent: bottomed out at 30, topped out at 70

I haven't tried finding the bottom limit for High, but that's because her only High trait is docility and I'm still working on my skills. >.> However, these numbers would indicate that the bottom limit for High traits is 60, with a range of 40 points for each stat.

  • For a Pumpkin pony, a breed with high docility, the limits to which docility could be changed by retro were max 100 and min 60.
  • A Bad Ass horse, a breed with decent docility, could not have its docility raised above 72 with retro.
  • The lowest a Hillshire horse, a breed with decent docility, could not be changed with retro lower than "Low", so between 20 to 39.
    • I don't have enough horse riding skills to even see semi-vague results for a decent docility breed at the lower docility value.

For more musings about this see the next edition of the AM Daily!

--Frazyl (talk) 18:30, 8 June 2021 (EDT)

A Sto Plains charger, a horse breed with decent docility, had a minimum of Low or ~30, so between 25 to 34. This fits the 30 minimum for Decent.

The only thing that doesn't fit is 70 vs 72 for maximum of Decent. Like Calcifer said it's possible the 230 trait points horses could have different ranges...

--Frazyl (talk) 11:53, 24 June 2021 (EDT)

Testing with by Bad Ass horse (230 points), the maximum intuition (which can be reliably increased with the horse ball) is 72. Before maxing using the ball and then fighting always increased intuition and at 72 it increases strength instead which it never did before.

--Frazyl (talk) 21:14, 25 June 2021 (EDT)

So trait changes when doing mounted combat stopped with this:

Frazyl's Hon the bay dun horse:
  Vitality .................. 32
  Speed ..................... 32
  Intuition ................. 72
  Strength .................. 27
  Docility .................. 67

This could mean that 32 is the lower limit for decent traits, or that 27 is the maximum for low traits or it failed for other reasons. I'll try to raise/lower docility and see what it changes.

--Frazyl (talk) 23:04, 25 June 2021 (EDT)

Frazyl's Hon the bay dun horse:
  Vitality .................. 32
  Speed ..................... 32
  Intuition ................. 68
  Strength .................. 27
  Docility .................. 71

Increasing docility, make space for more points in intuition, did not allow more trait point transfer.

  • This seems to indicate that 32 is the minimum for decent traits, at least for my 230 points Bad Ass horse.

This is supported by immediately getting back the change indicators once retro to less docility was done, which should rule out outside factors.

Frazyl's Hon the bay dun horse:
  Vitality .................. 37
  Speed ..................... 35 --
  Intuition ................. 68 ++
  Strength .................. 27
  Docility .................. 63

--Frazyl (talk) 00:00, 26 June 2021 (EDT)

I get the feeling that full-size horses get +2 added to each stat's min and max as compared to a pony. I've been training my horses with a focus on combat (i.e. int and str) without paying much attention to their breeds.

The D'reg warpony ended up like this:

Red Velvet the red roan horse:
  Vitality ................... 1
  Speed ...................... 0
  Intuition ................. 70
  Strength .................. 70
  Docility .................. 79

Vit and spd, the poor traits, went to 0 (or would have if I'd had a higher doc), while int and str, the decent traits, maxed at 70.

The Ephebian horse ended up like this:

White Mocha the buckskin horse:
  Vitality .................. 62
  Speed ...................... 2
  Intuition ................. 66
  Strength .................. 28
  Docility .................. 72

Vit, the high trait, went to 62. Spd, a poor trait, went to 2. Int, the decent trait, and str, the other poor trait, are kind of inconclusive. I raised doc as high as it would go, maxed at 72.

So my guess is pony: poor 0-40, decent 30-70, high 60-(unknown); horse: poor 2-42, decent 32-72, high 62-(unknown+2). I'll try to snag a Munz charger and report back in later.

Retroing

So far I've retro'd my pony twice to lower her docility - neither of those times changed her traits by 3 points.

The first time lowered Docility by 2 points, from 83 to 81, and increased Vitality. The second time lowered Docility by five points, from 81 to 76, and increased Strength.

More data is needed to determine if that's the full range, and whether or not those numbers have anything to do with the base breed's stat ranges. (My horse is a Chalk pony, so she has naturally good Strength and naturally poor Vitality, but with only two data points that could easily be a coincidence.)
