It appears that when the player is damaged a certain amount, the fight automatically stops. I'm in brave mode if that matters:
The burly brawler viciously boots you in the chest. Hp: 589 (1724) Gp: 238 (367) Xp: 367529 The burly brawler hits you in the face with an uppercut. Hp: 467 (1724) Gp: 206 (367) Xp: 367628 The burly brawler viciously boots you in the chest. The burly brawler kicks you in the left arm. The fight is stopped, leaving your opponent victorious. The burly brawler staggers off.
Hp: 556 (1724) Gp: 246 (367) Xp: 373380 You messily stab the burly brawler in the neck with your ruby-hilted rapier. The burly brawler viciously boots you in the right foot. Hp: 238 (1724) Gp: 250 (367) Xp: 373383 The fight is stopped, leaving your opponent victorious. The burly brawler staggers off.
Hp: 420 (1724) Gp: 367 (367) Xp: 378186 You stab the burly brawler deeply in the neck with your tiger fang. The burly brawler kicks out at you but you just dodge out of the way. Hp: 423 (1724) Gp: 350 (367) Xp: 378289 The burly brawler hits you in the chest with an uppercut. Hp: 344 (1724) Gp: 350 (367) Xp: 378292 The fight is stopped, leaving your opponent victorious. The burly brawler staggers off.
The fight may stop when the player's at 20% of max HP. I suppose a player with low HP and few defenses can get killed by a fighter getting a couple of hits in.
Also, saying/shouting "stop" doesn't work.
Special versus normal missions
It seems there's normal and special missions which must both be completed, in addition to a reputation check for promotions.
Charles Marchella says with a Genuan accent: Ah ... you have shown yourself to be capable of handling both normal missions and special missions with the flair we'd expect ... but at the moment, your standing in our family is somewhat of an issue. Work on that, and perhaps we can discuss a promotion again in the future. John DeBois says with a Genuan accent: Ah, this is a tough one. You have the reputation, and you have handled yourself well enough with your missions to be a worthy candidate for the promotion you seek. However, we would need some 'special' favours undertaken before we would be willing to consider a promotion.
