Recharge is a wizard command which allows the user to recharge a magical artifact.

Recharge is learnt from the Lecturer in Recent Runes at 100 levels of magic.items. An attempt to recharge an artifact requires some form of power - this can be in the form of purple mineral powder, grey dust or a charged black sea shell. The power is then consumed by the command, adding charges to the artifact or causing it to explode, depending on how safe the artifact was to recharge and if you pass the skillcheck. If the amount of powder or dust is not enough to charge an object even once the recharging process is aborted and the recharge is not executed.

Failing makes the artifact explode; as well as destroying the item, it can cause extreme damages to the wizard, up to more than 4000 hp. It also releases thaums that seems to be the same amount as the hp lost.

Recharging is considered a very dangerous practice and should only be attempted knowing that you might die. However some artifacts do a much lower amount of damage upon failure, so it is still possible to reduce the risks.

Camelion demonstrated that Sparkling Shelter can completely absorb the explosion (from balsa wands), Damage from Short wands are also absorbed by Sparkling Shelter. It's possible other wizard and priests shields may mitigate the damage. You can also use the recharge room south of one of the shops in the Sto Lat guild, but it is very expensive.  research If this has been marked on a page, it's because there was something that probably isn't known, that the person who edited the page thinks could be found out. Perhaps you could figure this thing out, and be famous evermore.

For information about recharging specific artifacts see the table in artifact.
