I used the dwarf coal merchant wandering around Genua near the docks and the Llamedos area.

I gave Gelon three lumps of coal before I had the quest.

Doing this quest (without looking at the spoilers on the page), I tried pebbles from the OC smithy and coal from the Rock Shop (AM) candy dish before I remembered the Genua coal merchant. (Next on the list would have been the Druid Quarry) Many, many pebbles were given to Gelon, so I do not think it is number of items. Instead, it is probably weight, given the 10 lb coal merchant lumps are quite a bit bigger than the OC pebbles. Theoretically, I guess enough pebbles would have gotten the quest, but it would have been a lot of pebbles.... Groth 05:17, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

I used five lumps from the Genuan merchant and then three more from the snack dish in Morpork, getting the quest. I'd say it's all random. Maybe the number, maybe the weight... maybe both. Liane 14:54, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
