"Adjective" quality messages when you spin the wheel appear to go as follows:

Short form Full form Quality level(s)
wrist With a slight wrist movement, you set the wheel in motion and expertly start to mould <item> from some clay. 6
expertly You expertly set the wheel in motion and start to mould the clay on it. 5
spinning With the wheel spinning, you start to mould something from the clay. 3 and 4
wobble You set the wheel turning with a slight wobble, and quickly start to mould something on it. 1 and 2

The "wobble" message has two (bad) results associated with it. The "spinning" message also has two possible results--one middling, one good. There therefore six levels of quality--not counting the one where the clay is flung off the wheel and you fail to mould anything at all.

Many quality levels have a few variations, with an adjective being changed in the long description. There are also typically a few different short descriptions it can have, i.e. a "fine teacup" may have the same description as a "pleasant teacup".

Quality level Short desc long desc Achievable with bonus
6 stylish A stylish teapot formed beautifully from pottery, with simple, elegant lines. Cow saucer

Quality level Short desc long desc Achievable with bonus
6
5
4 pleasant This pleasant saucer is clearly meant to resemble the face of a cow, formed in the shape of an oval with nostrils at one end and ears at the other. 242
3 rustic This rustic saucer is apparently supposed to be cow-themed, but one does wonder who might want to own crockery shaped like a cowpat. 242
2 chunky, lopsided This [chunky/lopsided] attempt at pottery is clearly supposed to be a saucer, but has ended up being a very strange shape. 242
1 hideous It's not quite clear what this is supposed to be, but it's flat (ish) and round (ish), and could be used as a saucer if you have no better options. 242

Cow teacup

Quality level Short desc long desc Achievable with bonus

4 fine, pleasant This [fine/pleasant] teacup has been artistically formed in a shape that suggests a cow, albeit not a particularly realistic one. The lumps at the bottom look somewhat like hooves, and a series of markings on the side opposite the handle are reminiscent of a cow's face. 242
3 rustic This rustic teacup has been patiently formed in a shape that suggests a cow, albeit a rather lop-sided one. 242
2
1 hideous, malformed This is a bit of a mess, really. You could use it as a teacup if you really wanted to, but it's not going to make your tea parties very popular. 242

Cow teapot

Quality level Short desc long desc Achievable with bonus
6 beautiful A beautiful teapot formed masterfully from pottery, in the shape of a jolly cow. Staining results

"Adjective" success levels for staining appear to be as follows:

Short form Full form
hastily stain You hastily start staining <item>.
hastily decorate You hastily start to decorate <item> with some <colour> stain.
carelessly You carelessly start to decorate <item> with some <colour> stain.
casually You casually start to apply some <colour> stain to <item>.
carefully You carefully start to apply <colour> stain to <item>.
deftly You deftly start to stain <item>.
expertly You expertly begin staining <item>.

The stain command takes around 15 seconds to complete. If you stop before it finishes, no progress will be made, and the item won't be ruined--therefore, if you see a message for a lower quality level than you want, you can stop and try again.

It may take multiple stages to stain an item. When it does, it seems that only the message you get during the last stage has an effect on the result.

If a pattern takes multiple stages, you can use multiple colours--one per stage--and they will all show up in the description, like so:

A vaguely cat-shaped pattern has been created on it in red, cream and black.

The colour you use first will be listed last.

Glazing results

The message you get when you start to glaze the item corresponds to the quality you'll end up with. From highest to apparent lowest:

Message Possible adjectives of result
You expertly start coating a <item> with some pink goo. lustrous, vivid
You skilfully start to coat a <item> with some pink goo. bright, clear, gleaming
You carefully begin covering a <item> with some glaze. shiny, strong, thick
You slowly start to glaze a <item>. ordinary, thin
You hastily begin coating a <item> with some pink goo. cloudy, murky
You carelessly start to coat a <item> with some glaze. patchy, streaky, uneven
You hastily slop some glaze on a <item>. bumpy, lumpy, rough
You haphazardly start to glaze a <item>. bubbled, cracked, gritty

This is handy, because if you "stop" before you finish glazing the item, it will remain unglazed and you'll be able to try again.

The description of the glaze can come in a few different formats:

  • It is covered with a <adjective> <colour> glaze.
  • It has been coated with a <adjective> <colour> glaze.
  • A <adjective> <colour> glaze covers the <item>.
  • A <adjective> <colour> glaze coats the <item>.

The difficulty of glazing depends on what you're glazing: some items are more difficult to glaze than others. This table is to help document the minimum requirements to achieve decent results at least occasionally, on various items. If you can achieve a particular quality level with a lower bonus than is listed, please feel free to update it!
