Key
Keys can be used to open lock on doors, containers or other things.
Some objects function like keys without looking like one.
Be advised that some locks are trapped, using the key might or might not bypass the trap. You can probe the lock and try to disable traps.
If you don't have a key another option is to try to pick the lock using a lockpick or hire a traveling locksmith to do it for you.
Keyring
Keyrings are special containers that only accept keys and allow you to open the locked things that the keys inside open.
Some keyrings can also be worn, which prevents fumbling the keyring when holding too many objects or needing to take it out.
- Keyring necklace from the Get 'em while we still got 'em" shop, east side of the Plaza of Broken Moons, Ankh-Morpork.
- Keyring necklace from Georgette Reyes at the Moonlit market.
These both weigh the same at 100 grams (via the jeweller's balance at Master Weestone in the Academy of Artificers).
Twisted vine rings are special rings made by witches that can learn to mimic up to 6 keys each, saving on burden, and opening doors with up to 20 magic gp.
Locks and duplicate keys
Various shops around the Disc sell lock packages that can be installed on player house doors and some that can be installed on furniture.
- A dingy workshop, Road of the Moon near the west city gate, Djelibeybi (duplicates original furniture keys)
- A locksmith's shop, Street of Cunning Artificers near Upper Broadway, Ankh-Morpork (duplicates original furniture keys)
- Sixstone's Home Security Emporium, Market Street, Bes Pelargic (duplicates original furniture keys)
- The deck of the "Fired Fox", off Riverwind Road, Ohulan Cutash (does not duplicate keys)
- The magic shop, eastern Royal Avenue, Genua
Some of these shops can also duplicate some keys, limited to those they have sold, although some also duplicate the keys that come with lockable furniture when purchased.
