Warning.png WARNING: This page contains information about idlechasing, which has undergone significant changes.

As of 2024, all commands that give xp give 20x gp as experience, if there has been 10 unique commands in between.
XP is no longer shared in a group due to changes[1] to the game. Grouped TMs are still possible.
The creators have proposed missions as a way to gain experience and money without combat.

Idlechasing Explained

Idlechasing is a way to get more experience when not actively playing, hence the name. Commands give experience based on how many guild points (GP) they consume. This means you can convert your GP regeneration to XP generation. At the default 3 GP regen, this means over 100k XP per hour.

Command XP used to be shared and players would create groups to more effectively idlechase together. This is no longer the case, although there is a chance of sharing TMs within groups.

How to Idlechase

All commands that give XP now give 20x GP as experience (as of March 2024). This means that idlechasing effectively is a lot simpler than it used to be. All you need to do is follow these rules of thumb:

  • Set up an alias to simplify the process.
  • Don't let your GP reach maximum, as this will "waste" GP that could have been converted into XP.
  • Have 11 or more commands in your alias, otherwise you will get an XP reduction.
  • Potential TMs are still useful in an alias.

With this in mind, there are some tips and tricks on how to set up your alias:

  • GP is restricted per major skill group, (c.f. the gp command). Consider having commands for non-primary skills early in your alias to avoid hitting this limit.
  • If you run out of usable GP, your command may not run which means you may come below the 11 commands limit and run into XP reduction.
  • If you want to run your alias as seldom as possible, run big and/or variable-GP commands at the end of your alias. For example contemplate for Wizards.
  • Some items drain GP, e.g. yellow stone rings. This GP does not grant XP.
  • Make sure to set the scene for what your commands require. If you're trying to read a map, you need light. If you're trying to search, you need to be in an appropriate location (typically outside). If you're trying to peek you need something to peek at, and so on and so forth.
  • Time spent is irrelevant, as long as you don't reach max GP. Don't be afraid to include TM attempts, such as language practice.
  • Some commands don't always give XP. For example, vurdere only gives XP if you are using it on a piece of armour that actually provides protection, so be mindful of using generic arguments like vurdere armour.
  • Commands that fail a skillcheck still give full experience.
  • casting different spells counts as unique commands.

Remember that automation is against Discworld's rules and using a trigger or timer to restart your alias is not permitted!

Setting an audio trigger or timer to prompt you into restarting it manually is fine, however. Default GP regeneration rate is 3 GP per tick, which is roughly every 2 seconds. Going from zero to max GP thus takes max GP / 1.5 seconds at default stats.

"Active" Idlechasing

Since all GP can be converted into XP, you may want to do parts of an idlechasing alias when you're out adventuring. In those cases you typically only want to use a portion of your GP at a time. This alias may be useful:

alias idlechaser alias ic $1$\; idlechaser $2*$ $1$

"Charge" this alias with a set of commands, and you can iterate through them one at a time with ic. In other words, if you use ic whenever your GP is nearing full, you will use the next command in the queue and thereby guarantee the 10-commands-in-between limit.

It only allows single-word commands. You can get around this by using more aliases like this:

alias ic1 peek random living thing; search; vurdere shield; judge weapon
alias ic2 hide; spellcheck fully spell_cips
alias ic3 cast spell_mwlc; study map; consult map; read primer
alias ic4 cast spell_boa; cast spell_otf; plant funnel on cabbage; eat cabbage; bury funnels
idlechaser ic1 ic2 ic3 ic4

(The last line "charges" the alias with the defined commands.)

First time you run ic it will go through the ic1 commands, then ic2, ic3 and so on before wrapping around.

In this alias it is recommended to use commands that don't take a lot of time and that you're less likely to use when adventuring, in order to avoid reduction from repeating them.
