Guild level licences

Elusive Ron who wanders around the Thieves' Guild in Ankh-Morpork provides various Thieves' Guild licences that look different, depending on the guild level of the requesting thief. A certain period of time (1 day?) has to pass before he will hand out another licence.

In November 2009, wearable licences were introduced[1]. These can be requested with "I'd like a special necklace (or badge) licence please".

When returning from a leave of absence Kordane does not return the original licence, but the standard one with ratty cardboard covers.

In November 2023, wearable licences were upgraded[2] to have unique short descriptions like "sapphire silk Thieves' Guild licence" instead of always "Thieves' Guild Licence". In addition, more licences (at least one more) beyond level 425 were added to the game.

Level Short Description Long Description Badge Suffix Necklace Suffix
0-64 cardboard Thieves' Guild licence This licence is actually a small notebook with ratty cardboard covers. The front cover has been stamped with the official seal of the Ankh-Morpork Guild of Thieves. N/A (from Kordane) N/A (from Kordane)
65-124 black cotton Thieves' Guild licence A poorly embroidered patch (possibly the handiwork of a well meaning but sadly untalented relative) marking this notebook as an official licence of the Ankh-Morpork Guild of Thieves, has been stuck on with the same tar used to harden the black cotton cover. While quite attractive-looking from afar, the book has an unfortunate tendency to get quite sticky in warm weather, or when kept close to the body. N/A (not wearable) N/A (not wearable)
125-161 hemp Thieves' Guild licence A small notebook covered with rough hemp fabric. The front cover has been stamped with the official seal of the Ankh-Morpork Guild of Thieves. N/A (not wearable) N/A (not wearable)
162-191 stiff leather Thieves' Guild licence A stiff backing of leather makes this licence from the Ankh-Morpork Guild of Thieves a little cumbersome to carry. Unyielding and inflexible, much like the rules governing the conduct of thieves within the Big Wahoonie, it is nonetheless as official as it is metaphorical. The guild coat of arms decorates the front cover, picked out in a shiny silver. N/A (not wearable) N/A (not wearable)
192-221 brown leather Thieves' Guild licence The small notebook serves as an official licence in the Ankh-Morpork Guild of Thieves. A thin cord of brown leather allows the licence to be worn around the neck for safekeeping.
222-261 oiled suede Thieves' Guild licence A stylish notepad which acts as an official licence from the Ankh-Morpork Guild of Thieves. Functional oiled suede has been folded over to protect the more delicate paper inside, and the guild emblem has been burned into the facing cover. On the back of the licence is a bronze safety pin which would allow it to be worn. A cord of braided suede allows the licence to be worn around the neck for safekeeping.
262-291 black canvas Thieves' Guild licence Neat black canvas covers this licence from the Ankh-Morpork Guild of Thieves. Tarnished silver whipcord stitches trim the edges of the notebook, giving it a slightly more pulled-together, "successful lurker-about-the-city" appearance. A tarnished silver safety pin is neatly sewn to the back of the licence, allowing it to be worn like a badge of dishonour. A loop of the silver whipcord has been attached to either side of the licence, allowing it to be worn like a necklace.

322-350 deerskin Thieves' Guild licence This notebook has been covered with soft, lightweight deerskin which has been embossed with the seal of the Ankh-Morpork Guild of Thieves. It serves as an official licence and is held together with dark sinew that is as decorative as it is functional. A bronze pin has been sewn neatly to the back of the licence, allowing it to be pinned to a shirt. A length of dark sinew has been attached to the licence which would allow it to be worn like a necklace.
351-376 lambskin Thieves' Guild licence Delicate lambskin has been dyed a deep shade of aubergine and fashioned into a snazzy cover for this official licence of the Ankh-Morpork Guild of Thieves. A matching gold silk cord, tasseled and braided, gives an almost royal, gaudy pretention to the notebook. A bronze pin has been sewn neatly to the back of the licence, allowing it to be pinned to a shirt. A long strip of aubergine leather has been attached to the licence, allowing it to be worn like a necklace.
