Gemcutting

From Discworld MUD Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search

Gemcutting is a crafting activity concerning the cutting and setting of gems. Raw gems are cut, ground and polished into one of the faceted or cabochon cuts and can then be set into finesmithed jewellery with an appropriate gem slot. Together with the gemcutting workshop, new finesmithing patterns have been added, which have one or more slots for gems of different sizes.

The gemcutting workshop can be found in Slippery Hollow.

Chip

Chipping a cut or an uncut gem into two smaller gems using the gemcutting tools. Chipping an already cut gem results in two smaller uncut gems. On failure, the gem size is reduced, but no chip is produced. The size of the created chip seems to be randomly chosen from the possible combinations; e.g. cutting a large gem may result in two small gems or one tiny and one medium-sized gem.

Cut

Cutting an uncut gem with the gemcutting tools into one of the faceted or cabochon cuts.

Grind

Grinding a roughly cut gem on a grinding wheel to refine the cut.

Polish

Polishing the cut and ground gem with a jeweller's polishing cloth.

Shave

Shaving off a cut from a gem, turning it back into an uncut gem of a smaller size. On failure, more of the gem is shaved off and lost.

Tumble

Tumbling a gem in a gem tumbler to prepare it for a cabochon cut. Depending on the hardness of the gem, it may need to be tumbled multiple times. If a gem is tumbled for too long, it is turned into a pile of gem dust, which disappears when opening the tumbler.

Set

Set a gem into a piece of jewellery using the gemcutting tools. On failure the gem may get scratched and need to be polished with a cloth again.

Cuts

Depending on the material and quality of the uncut gem, it can be cut into one of the cabochon or faceted cuts.

Cabochon Cuts

Cabochon cuts can only be applied to tumbled gems and are most suited for low-quality gems that wouldn't withstand cuts with many facets.

Gem Sizes

Raw and cut gems come in different sizes. The gemcutting workshop proprietor Jeromee only sells shards, fragments, and chips. Other sizes can be achieved through shaving or chipping an uncut gem. Failing a shave or chip, can result in a raw gem that is too small to cut (smaller than tiny), likewise tumbling a gem for too long will result in a pile of gem dust.

Raw Size (shop description) Cut Size
Shard Huge
Fragment Large
- Medium
Chip Small
- Tiny

Gem Quality

A raw gem has one of four quality levels, which remains with the gem, no matter how a cut turns out:

Quality
Very high
High
Average
Low

The default colour is the colour of the gem if it appears without additional colour attribute. Colour variants are prepended to the gem material name and are also visible in the gem's short description. Other than that, the colour variants have the same properties as the base gem.

Gem values are divided into eight groups (see research). The shop sells gems for three times their value.

For each quality the highest cut the gem can take is listed.

Trivia

  • Tiger's Eye gems are treated as real eyes by magic spells that require an eye as a spell component (e.g. Pragi's Fiery Gaze). While this behaviour has been reported, the report has been declined, which may mean that this is intentional or at least considered funny enough leave it as it is.
