Ephebe underground map by Kefka updated for Quow's Cow Bar

Ephebe is both the name of the country and the major city located in the western region of the Disc known as Klatch.

It opened to the masses in January 2013. [1]

Situation

The city is relatively close to its northern neighbor, Djelibeybi. Docks in the northeastern portion of the city run along The Circle Sea. The Chronides farmstead is located to the immediate southeast of the city, followed further out by Il Drim. To the west is the Ephebian desert.

Citizenship

You can obtain Citizenship by going to the inner citadel and passing the tests.

Player houses and shops can be visited and citizens will be able to bid on them in the future in the Real Estate Agency in the citadel.

Language and Money

The language in Ephebe is Ephebian and the currency is Ephebian money.

Other areas with the same language and currency include the Oasis, Il Drim and the Chronides farmstead.

  • Foreign Rates
-Many Shops and Shopkeepers charge foreigners to Ephebe a 10% increase on their shop price.

Crime and Punishment

research If this has been marked on a page, it's because there was something that probably isn't known, that the person who edited the page thinks could be found out. Perhaps you could figure this thing out, and be famous evermore.

Killing bureaucrats, officials, hoplites and citadel guards or any other citizen (even sinister cutthroat) in their presence will make the hoplites and citadel guards aggressive towards you. After you've been killed, they will forgive you.

Stealing from NPCs and shops will increase the cost of items at shops. Costs will also be increased if you kill too many citizens, and you may eventually be banned from purchasing goods. Slaughtering the traders may get you banned from purchasing goods faster.

If you become notorious enough for stealing and killing in Ephebe your name will be written on the bronze stele before the Citadel. The names on the bronze stele are erased once in a while.

There are officials and bureaucrats who are specifically described as "corrupt", i.e. "corrupt bureaucrat". You can bribe these to improve your standing.[2] You do this by slipping coins to them (trying to simply "bribe" them will get a refusal). If you don't have a criminal reputation, they'll refuse the offer:

slip Ephebian coins to bureaucrat
You offer to slip one Ephebian decadrachma, 4 Ephebian drachmae, some Ephebian oboli, 6 Ephebian hemioboli and some Ephebian derechmi to the corrupt bureaucrat.
The corrupt bureaucrat whispers to you in Ephebian with an Ephebian accent: As far as I know, you're not wanted by the City of Ephebe.
The corrupt bureaucrat rejects the slip offer from you.

If you do have a criminal reputation, but the bribe isn't large enough, they'll refuse it:

slip Ephebian coins to official
You offer to slip 6 Ephebian decadrachmae, 12 Ephebian stater, 6 Ephebian drachmae, some Ephebian oboli, 3 Ephebian hemioboli and some Ephebian derechmi to the corrupt official.
The corrupt official whispers to you in Ephebian with an Ephebian accent: That small an incentive isn't going to make any difference to the way the City of Ephebe feels about you.
The corrupt official rejects the slip offer from you.

It seems you have to offer at least &&&&&&&&&&+20000 2M S4|16de before they'll accept it. It's unclear whether this amount varies with the degree of your criminal reputation.  research If this has been marked on a page, it's because there was something that probably isn't known, that the person who edited the page thinks could be found out. Perhaps you could figure this thing out, and be famous evermore.  If you offer more than this, they'll take all of it--not just the minimum amount they'd have been willing to accept. After accepting a bribe, they disappear:

slip Ephebian coins to official
You offer to slip 5 Ephebian minae, some Ephebian decadrachmae, some Ephebian stater, some Ephebian drachmae, some Ephebian oboli, some Ephebian hemioboli and some Ephebian derechmi to the corrupt official.
The corrupt official whispers to you in Ephebian with an Ephebian accent: I'll have a word with my contact.
You slip 5 Ephebian minae, some Ephebian decadrachmae, some Ephebian stater, some Ephebian drachmae, some Ephebian oboli, some Ephebian hemioboli and some Ephebian derechmi to the corrupt official.
The corrupt official winks at you.
The corrupt official looks around furtively before wandering away.

Some notes:

You offer to slip 2 Ephebian minae and 5 Ephebian staters to the corrupt official.
The corrupt official whispers to you in Ephebian with an Ephebian accent: I'm afraid that you've already bribed the City of Ephebe recently.
The corrupt official rejects the slip offer from you.

Layout

  • The city is dominated by The Citadel in the west.
  • The entry to the Labyrinth is in the Citadel, you can follow one of the guides past the Labyrinth to the Ephebe inner citadel.
  • The Citadel is surrounded by the Street of Enlightenment and the Slouching Gardens.
  • A lighthouse marks the northernmost point in Ephebe.
    • There's is a jump hidden exit at the top of the lighthouse. It leads to falling to the ground at high speed. This hurts. Don't be drunk and fall off the lighthouse with your group following you like during the himation party!
    • Its very hot at the top of the lighthouse during summer, stay too long and the increasing hot temperatures can lead to heatstroke.
  • Dockside Walk in the northeast cups the Bay of Ephebe and in some rooms leads to a lower dock level.
  • Much like Djelibeybi, in the approximate centre of the city is a marketplace named the Harbour Market.
  • There's a smaller market called the Dockside Market to the north of the Harbour Market and northeast of the Citadel gardens.
  • To the southeast of the Harbour Market are the Southern Gardens, which contain trees with sap, refreshments and multiple player stalls.

  • The Ephebian Barracks off the small plaza and along Hypothetical Road.
  • A grand-looking mansion on the east side of the small plaza. There is a balcony that can be seen from below that leads into it, but climbing is unavailable. Perhaps this is a future player house.
  • Real estate office - mid-way on Philosopher's Walk
  • Several (closed) shops on the western parts of Philosopher's walk: a general store, a pleasant and well-ordered stationery supplies shop.
  • Prison - south end of Impartiality Avenue

Altars

Ephebe has a number of sacrificial altars to various deities. On them, you can donate money, offer gifts to the gods, and sacrifice animals to receive temporary divine rewards.  research If this has been marked on a page, it's because there was something that probably isn't known, that the person who edited the page thinks could be found out. Perhaps you could figure this thing out, and be famous evermore.

Guilds

Assassins' Guild

A very small Assassins Guild branch is located somewhere in Epiolios' Ephebian Endive tavern, on Petulia Avenue.

Priests' Guild

Gapp has a small temple on the south side of the Harbour Market.

Fish has a small temple on the north side of the Harbour Market.

Pishe has a temple off of Petulia Avenue.

Thieves' Guild

The local Thieves Guild guildhall is located in hidden underground tunnels and might be a bit dangerous to get into for less nimble adventurers.

  • You can find a way down in a quiet place in the Harbour Market.
  • It's rather small, about the size of the Djelian outpost, featuring a fighting classroom, a small shop, and the room with Adriano, the weapons fence.
  • Adriano is a weapons fence available for all.
  • Non-thieves cannot enter the shop.
  • Be aware that the purse of non-thieves may be a bit lighter after a visit to the guild.

There is also an easily accessible jewellery fence - Klepton the Fixer - at the end of Ponder Alley. Unlike many fences, non-thieves can ask to list special items wanted by Klepton.

Niknax the smuggl... I mean legitimate businessman is doing business in the Underdocks below the Dockside Market. You better not be talking to the guards about him!

Warriors' Guild

A branch of the Klatchian Foreign Legion is located on the Dockside Market in a tent.

Wizards' Guild

There is a hidden artifacts/wizard's stall in a strange alleyway in Ephebe. [3] [4]

Witches' Guild

Decate the Dreadful can be found in the Underdocks below the Dockside Market. If she doesn't like you, then you might leave with less sanity then you had going in.
