Learning Djelian: Lesson 1

When in the Djelian classroom at the right time for a language you are fluent in, you can enrol in djelian {written/spoken} [lesson].

Dilangelo says with a Morporkian accent: The cost is &&&&&&&&&&&+6000 DjToon 30.00 for your Djelian lesson and the textbook deposit.
Dilangelo says with a Morporkian accent: Now we shall begin the lesson.
Dilangelo exclaims with a Morporkian accent: Let me just fix you right up with a textbook!
Dilangelo says with a Morporkian accent: If you don't study, you'll have problems with your final exam.
Dilangelo gives a closed orange textbook to you.

On enrolling, you'll be given a textbook. On completing the first spoken lesson you will gain around 9 levels in spoken Djelian. It's important to hold onto the book and keep it handy for the later lessons and the exam. You'll also need to go out into the world and TM your Djelian a bit to get to 20 levels of Djelian to continue your course. There is also a mandatory wait period between lessons.

The first written Djelian lesson can be enrolled in once you have 10 levels in spoken Djelian. It costs &&&&&&&&&&&+4000 DjToon 20.00, and awards around 5 levels of written Djelian.

Dilangelo says with a Morporkian accent: I see you are truly in need of a beginner's lesson in the written Djelian language.
Dilangelo says with a Morporkian accent: Although you do need some knowledge of the basics of the language before you can begin to learn how to read and write. I suggest improving your spoken skills first.
Dilangelo says with a Morporkian accent: The cost is &&&&&&&&&&&+4000 DjToon 20.00 for your Djelian lesson.
Dilangelo says with a Morporkian accent: Now we shall begin the lesson.
Dilangelo says with a Morporkian accent: We'll begin with a review of some basic vocabulary.

Learning Djelian: Lessons 2 and 3

After the waiting period and reaching the required skill level, go back to Dilangelo and enrol in djelian {written/spoken} [lesson] again.

Dilangelo says: The cost is &&&&&&&&&&&+8000 DjToon 40.00 for your Djelian lesson.

In the spoken lesson he will then ask that you repeat a number of phrases.

Dilangelo says: Now repeat after me "sot-fin-lip-yih bibh-phin-bhon sap lat-prin than yih-bibh ghot-nut-phin-lat-bibh sat-phin phin-yih lip-mit-bibh what-phon.". This means "Kindly remove the tip of your scimitar from my lower back."

After successfully repeating a number of phrases which Dilangelo requests you to say, he asks you a number of Djelian words:

Dilangelo asks: What is the Djelian word for desert?

These can be found in the textbook which you were given at the start.

The written lesson is slightly different.

Dilangelo exclaims with a Morporkian accent: Let's go over some more basic vocabulary. I hope you've been studying your textbook!
Dilangelo asks with a Morporkian accent: What does this word mean?
Dilangelo writes a word on the blackboard.
r board
Written on the board is "Golden bow, Majestic eagle, Man with pot".

You then find these phrases in the textbook, and give the translation in your spoken language.

You say: visit
Dilangelo says with a Morporkian accent: Indeed! You do seem to be progressing nicely.

Around 8 levels of spoken Djelian are awarded for the 2nd spoken lesson, and around 5 levels of written Djelian for the 2nd written lesson.

Again, after the lesson is over, study the next lesson in the textbook for extra TMs. You can enrol in lesson 3 for spoken/written once you have reached level 40 in spoken/written.

Lesson 3 is the same for spoken, but with around 8-11 spoken. It is slightly different for written, with Dilangelo asking you to write phrases on the board. It awards around 2-5 written levels, and Dilangelo warns you to prepare for the exam next time you come.

Dilangelo says: The cost is &&&&&&&&&&+12000 DjToon 60.00 for your Djelian lesson.
Dilangelo says with a Morporkian accent: Now we shall begin the lesson.
Dilangelo says with a Morporkian accent: Let's check your handwriting.
Dilangelo says with a Morporkian accent: Please write "farm" on the board in Djelian. Check your textbook for the correct way to write it.
Dilangelo says in Morporkian with a Morporkian accent: Congratulations, you have completed the third lesson.
Dilangelo says in Morporkian with a Morporkian accent: This means that you have now achieved an advanced level of speaking and reading in Djelian.
Dilangelo congratulates you.
Dilangelo says in Morporkian with a Morporkian accent: Remember to study your textbook before the final exam.

The Exam

Dilangelo will give you the exam paper when you enrol in his lessons for the final time. The exam costs &&&&&&&&&&+16000 DjToon 80.00. Read the instructions on the paper then begin exam to start. There are ten multiple-choice questions asking you to translate phrases from Morpork into Djelian, the answers to which can all be found in the textbook. Sometimes the exact answer will not be in the textbook, and you will have to look up individual words from the phrase.

Completing the exam will raise your spoken Djelian by around 8-11 levels, and around 8-11 levels in written. When you have completed the exam you can return the textbook to Dilangelo for a refund on your deposit.

Do not return the textbook until you have completed both exams.

TMing Djelian

Spoken

Good places to TM include:

  • The bazaar in Djelibeybi, especially in the east half (which has the prophet)--but if you're going to be idle, put your coins away to protect them from pickpocketing children.
  • NPCs whose goods can be listed and each browsed separately: receptionist at the language school, towel trader at the Ephebian Embassy and the peddler at the stoning place on Temple Street.
  • The room with the three priests in the palace in Djelibeybi.
  • The zoologist in a tent in the Oasis is also chatty--though since it seems to be harder to tm from the same person twice in a row, it's a good idea to move after getting one.
  • Buccaneers in the harbor talk to you when you enter the room they're in. They also respond to many souls.
  • The pyramid north of Djelibeybi is good - the hostess talks a lot. One thing that I find works well is to TM the language, then do something else until you TM another skills and then go back.

Written

Apart from various signs throughout Djelibeybi:

  • The Embalmers' Guild has 3 long signs in the reception area.
  • The Bes Pelargic Language Institute sells a dictionary in Djelian.
  • Nicolette Leveaux's shop has a Djelian clothing catalogue, among others.
  • The textbook provided for Djelian students at the language school can be read.
