A Tale Of Another World

Believe it or not, this was originally going to be based on The Logical Song, by Supertramp, but then I ended up thinking darker, which led to listening to the entire Be album, by Pain of Salvation, straight through, and eventually decided to work on something closer to that storyline. It's ended up completely differrent to both, of course, although the themes are similar. I was a little worried it would be too depressing, but people seemed to really like it.

I had great trouble trimming this one down to size, to fit in the stone: I've included the original wording below, for reference purposes. As it was, the stone frequently told me it was getting bored during the stages.

convince A Tale Of Another World to tell me "You sing a race given all of creation to live in, and the devices they used to tame it." at stage 1

convince A Tale Of Another World to say "The air around Tohya begins to thicken, just as their cities conquered the air around them as they devoured the world, protecting their trembling inhabitants from everything that is outside and destroying it so they will be troubled no more." at stage 2
convince A Tale Of Another World that stage 2 is easy
convince A Tale Of Another World to tell me "The air around you begins to thicken, just as they conquerred even the air around them to protect themselves from it." at stage 2

convince A Tale Of Another World to tell me "You fall to the blackened earth around you, shattered, broken, and ruined, as the once-mighty towers and machines did after their final triumphs over both the land and each other." at stage 4

convince A Tale Of Another World to say "You stand quietly, thinking about the story that you have just been told, almost not noticing small, mournful little purple flowers growing around the exhausted body, in silent defiance of those who wanted to take a world for themselves." when finished
convince A Tale Of Another World to tell me "You begin to feel faint traces of growth around you, as small, mournful flowers grow around your body, silently standing in defiance of those who wanted to steal a world's power for themselves." when finished
Tohya sings a tale of men of steel, women of stone, and the mighty works they produced together to bind their world to their service: the towering buildings, the eternally busy machines, and the assurances that theirs was the only path they could ever follow.

You feel the air thicken around you, as their cities continue their tasks of devouring the world, both protecting their trembling inhabitants from everything that is outside and destroying it so they will be troubled no more.

Tohya tells of the people who noticed too late what they had built and what they had destroyed. She whispers quietly of the fears that overcame them, and the fires that raged across their world as they fought each other for the precious remains of what they could once have had.

Tohya falls to the blackened earth around her, shattered, broken, and ruined, as the once-mighty towers and machines did after their final triumphs over both the land and each other. She lies unmoving, all purpose left, all her power spent by others in their fear and their ignorance.

You stand quietly, thinking about the story that you have just been told. You almost don't notice the small, mournful little purple flowers growing around Tohya's exhausted body, silently standing in defiance of those who wanted to steal the world for themselves.

Aunty Eucalypta's Daring Drink

Aunty Eucalypta's Daring Drink took second place (behind Granny Weatherwax) in the four-stage class at the 2004 Lancre Witch Trials.

Nanna Jehane von Bruxa says: I was flying over the disc, and suddenly saw a black circular spot with a radius of about 1 km. Thinking it was rather odd, I went to have a look at it. Right in the centre was a blackened large hagstone. Much research and coercing later, I was able to reconstruct what had happened. This is what I found in that stone: Aunty Eucalypta's Daring Drink.

Jehane von Bruxa gets some very strange herbs from her pouch and starts to brew a foul steaming broth with it.
Jehane von Bruxa enchants the smoke that comes from the broth until it starts to glow in a fluorescent greenish colour.
Jehane von Bruxa speaks the Words of Summoning and summons a horrendous smoke spirit in the greenish glow.
Jehane von Bruxa luckily manages to bind the spirit and thus prevent the destruction of herself and her surroundings.
Jehane orders the smoke spirit to put on a kettle and make her a cup of tea, with three lumps of sugar, mind you! The smoke spirit hurries to obey.

If You Come Closer

This was my long freestyle trick for the 2005 Trials. It was originally based on the song "Monsters", by The Gathering - original lyrics by Zlaya Hadzich (A very cool dutch trip-rock group) but... deviated... somewhat during the writing process, although the original theme is still there.

The Judgement Of The Crows

This one is fun to perform on those strange non-witch-type people!

You prepare to cast The Judgement Of The Crows on Cyrus.
You raise your arms and begin to weave your enchantment. You send your mind out and call a flock of crows to sit in judgement upon Cyrus.
You watch as the convocation of crows settles down, squawking and gabbling loudly, each of its members seeming to have a different opinion.
The crows all fall silent as a decision is reached. The largest crow takes to the air, circling above Cyrus before finally depositing a large dollop of guano on his head. The others caw loudly in appreciation, then take wing and flap off.
Mss Punarina D'Odelay giggles.
Young Nell cheers enthusiastically.
Cyrus sighs.
You grin.
Mss Punarina D'Odelay gets a fluffy pink towel from a pocket in Mouth Of Madness.
Mss Punarina D'Odelay asks Cyrus in Morporkian with a Lancrastian accent: want to borrow my towel?

Tohya's Watery Visions

This was my item-required trick for the 2005 Trials, so requires a silver ring. It's how I'd like to do scrying. It's a bit more magical-looking than regular Witchy and wizzie methods, which I like, but it still leans more towards the Witchy way of things.

Trust In A Witch

I created this Trick in order to practise my elemental magic. Another Trick that uses these skills is Wee Morticia Frump's Elemental Apple Tree. As well as the theme of the four elements (to which I added the Auriental fifth element of wood), this Trick uses the five senses and the five tastes (including umami). Although other people in the room see the Trick as being cast on them, it is in fact cast on nothing; I couldn't come up with a way to have something make sense as both what the witch sees and what the audience sees.

--Slint

* [sweet, taste, air]
  Slint looks directly at you and breathes out sharply. The air thickens around you; things slow. The taste of honey is in your mouth.

* [umami, feel, earth]
  Slint bends down and touches the ground. You feel a throbbing welling up from deep within the earth. Your heart begins to thump harder and harder; you're almost shaken over by each pulse as it pumps the meaty broth of your blood around your body.

* [bitter, smell, fire]
  Slint throws her arms upwards and a crack of lightning splits the sky. You cough raspingly as the bitter smell of smouldering almonds burns a fire through your nose and lungs.

* [salty, sight, water]
  A single drop of water lands on your face and runs down your cheek. Is it rain or a tear? You see it glisten with a salty viscosity on Slint's hand as she gently wipes it away.

* [sour, hearing, wood]
  A sour, wooden whisper rasps sibilantly inside your head. "You can't trust your own senses, but trust in a witch is never misplaced." Slint smiles sadly at you and wishes you well.

Wee Alida's Hot Flashes

Wee Alida's Hot Flashes, performed by Old Woman Pokeberry Clutterbuck at the 2004 Lancre Witch Trials.

Pokeberry looks a bit sheepish, what with her eyebrows missing. Nice tan though!

Wee Morticia Frump's Elemental Apple Tree

Wee Morticia Frump's Elemental Apple Tree was an entrant in the four-stage class at the 2004 Lancre Witch Trials.

Wee Morticia Frump says: My trick is called Elemental Apple Tree. It uses an apple seed.

Wee Morticia Frump digs a small hole with her hand and plants an apple seed in the earth. Wee Morticia Frump mutters something mystical but incomprehensible.
Wee Morticia Frump squints at a passing rain cloud. A brief cloudburst waters the freshly planted seed. Wee Morticia Frump continues to mutter mystical incantations.
Wee Morticia Frump stamps her foot and the ground trembles as a young sapling shoots up into the air. You marvel as it grows into a mature apple tree in just seconds.
Wee Morticia Frump hums softly and a delicate blossom appears and quickly ripens into a perfect fire red apple. As you reach for the delicious prize, the entire tree crumbles to dust before your eyes and is blown away on the wind.
Morticia nods knowingly at you. At that moment you realise that all beauty and wisdom and wealth and power are but fleeting things, for one day you too will be nothing but dust.

Young Nut's Lost Innocence

This was my first ever Trick as Nut. She's not really got the skills to do multi-stage Tricks yet, but I do quite like this one. There's an extra joke in it from the caster's point of view.

Nut sees you next to her, gives you a brief glance from under her eyelashes, and blushes quite enchantingly. What a sweet young girl. Those witches really can't be as bad as everyone says they are.
Nut grins, clears her throat, and begins to sing the most astoundingly bawdy song you've heard in quite some time. Nanny Ogg would be proud.

Or from the caster's point of view:

You put on your most enchantingly innocent face.
Having lulled everyone into a false sense of security, you proudly belt out that song Nanny Ogg taught you the other week. One day you must get her to tell you what it's about.

This is what the caster sees:

Unlucky Charlie smells atrocious! It's upsetting even your rubber duckie. You decide to do something about it! 'It's Bath Time!'
You imagine a huge tin bath full of soapy water, which promptly appears. You scrub Unlucky Charlie thoroughly while singing a few ditties.
A job well done! Unlucky Charlie looks clean again, and your cute little duckie is happy. You stop imagining the bath, which slowly fades from view.

This is what the target sees:

Tink D'Vine takes a good look at you, sniffs, and holds her nose in disgust. She points her cursed evil rubber duckie at you accusingly and exclaims gleefully: 'It's Bath Time!'
Tink D'Vine seems to pull a huge tin bath from thin air, grabs hold of you and starts scrubbing you vigorously, droning ritual cleansing chants such as 'A wizard's staff has a knob on the end.'
You splutter a bit as you resurface from the bath, nice and clean now. Tink's evil rubber duckie quackles insanely. The bath, being only imaginary, slowly fades from view.
