Banishing of Loquacious Spirits is a miscellaneous witch spell that de-talkerises an item.


Acquisition

The spell can be learnt once the witch has 25 levels of magic.spells.misc. It is taught by Granny Weatherwax or Aunty Ogg-San.

Casting

The spell costs 20 GP to cast, generates 1 thaum and takes up 5 units of head space.

Failing this spell often causes another additional item in your inventory to become a talker.

This spell does not require any components.

Casting messages

You examine <target> closely.
You meet the eyes of the talkative spirit in <target> and challenge it to a contest of wills.
The loquacious spirit accepts your challenge and your wills clash in a silent battle.

Failure (something else becomes a talker)

Somewhere inside <random inventory item> a pair of glittering eyes swirl into being.
<target> cackles evilly.

Failure (nothing else becomes a talker)

<target> cackles evilly.

Success

You tell the spirit: "Didn't I tell you to leave, you nasty little critter, you?"
The pair of glittering eyes in <target> close and fade away forever.
You manage to banish the spirit from <target>.

Things said to the spirit in successful cast

You tell the spirit: "Didn't I tell you to leave, you nasty little critter, you?"
You tell the spirit: "Here now, I know yer in there.  Come along out of there."
You tell the spirit: "Still there, eh, you little pest?  Be off!"

What others see

<caster> stares at something, mumbling under her breath.
<caster> holds her breath and squints fiercely at something.

You hear a despirited sigh from something and it is enveloped by a small puff of vapour.
