I find these kinds of aliases to be rather handy:

Restricting player interactions

Some players don't like certain (or any) interactions, and it gets hard to keep track of it by just writing those down. But nicknames can be used for that, e.g.:

Mind space

Counters, general computations

Binary counters (using an alias per bit) are very slow, incrementing a 3-bit "register" takes about 30 seconds with the regular alias penalties, but many individual aliases can be generated to get counters of the form $*$ n, for instance, and FSMs in general can be implemented on aliases. With such counters stacks (or even tapes) can be emulated. General computations would be very slow, but a stack machine (with external aliases for specific tasks) may be handy. Though not yet sure what for.


More tricks/problems to investigate

The aliases are very limited in their capabilities for gathering information from the environment. They can be made to fail or succeed depending on presence of given objects in the inventory (using containers and items needed for aliases to succeed), and maybe with higher covert skills that would also allow to check which NPCs are around by planting items on them (though if they can give some items to players, and/or accept items from them, it could be used for checking as well). Decaying objects may allow to measure time that way (aliases themselves could, but not if there's branching involved). Similarly, alias branching can depend on what's written on a paper, but only using predefined messages: by reading the papers aloud in front of NPCs that react by giving or taking objects in response.

Probably it won't be of much use, but it's potentially fun to play with.


Client-side setup

Quow's database (comes with Quow's MUSHclient plugins, available from http://quow.co.uk/) is handy to look up items and to read map data for speedwalking. Here is an SQLite view I use for item lookup:

Delivery missions

There are delivery-related Ankh-Morpork Job Market and dead letter office jobs with rather high monetary and XP rewards, which are available to a prepared newbie. This guide is intended to prepare a newbie to do such jobs on their own.

The reward for completing a "Deliverer of Foreign Goods" job is 152720 XP and A$75, for "distant land" letter deliveries -- 64000 XP and A$32. One can apply for a job during cooldown (an hour since the previous job's completion), and finish it once the cooldown is over, approaching 216720 XP (not counting idle and exploration XP) and A$107 per hour doing just those two mission types. In addition to this gainful employment (as some call it), one gets a Special Courier's hat, which they can tip at people, at other living creatures, or even at ghosts and various undead creatures. It can be worn under a helmet, too.

Searching and walking

Those missions would involve a lot of walking and item or NPC searching, but it's relatively easy to find NPCs by scrying them with a crystal ball, and one doesn't have to remember all the shop inventories and maps, for there are item search and speedwalking aids:

  • Kefka's item database
  • MUD clients with speedwalking and/or item search (todo: list clients with such functionality)
  • Aliases for walking between fixed locations (todo: provide such aliases)

Genua and Bes Pelargic aren't reachable simply by walking from Ankh-Morpork, but there are other safe and easy means to reach them and to get back.

Arcane transport

Arcane transport costs A$20 per trip, but at most 3 trips are needed to do everything one needs in those and get back. It costs A$60, still keeping missions (A$75 or A$107) profitable. Minimal knowledge of local language and possession of local currency are required to use it.

Carriages

To save on arcane transport, free carriages can be used to travel to or from Genua. Intercontinental Express carriage is particularly handy for getting out of Genua, since it doesn't require paying as much attention to the direction, so one can wait for it, hop on it, and travel while doing something else. The Genuan Intercontinental Express carriage stop is located at the courtyard outside the main gate (west of Genua).

L-space

While it's tricky to get into a desired location using L-space, it's quite helpful for getting out, and particularly out of Bes Pelargic, using the Bes Pelargic L-space Bubble.

Mysterious doors

Portals left by travelling wizards: some wizards do those missions too, opening portals from nearby rooms into other cities. It doesn't harm to look into a portal ("look enter door"), and enter it if it leads to a desired location.

Taxi service

Using the taxi service involves asking other players for help, which usually isn't necessary, but it may be nice to pay players rather than NPCs. See "refer taxi".
