Convoking bonus vs. number of stages

What's meant by "maximum" here is that trying to convince the trick it has more stages than the maximum will result in this message:

Sometrick tells you: I don't know about me, dear, but you surely can't handle all that.

This does not use any gp, unlike a normal failure.

(Only the "convince <trick> it has <number> stages" step was tested.)

With convoking bonus of:

  • 101: maximum of 3 stages
  • 134: maximum of 3 stages--may not be able to actually attain 3, but can attain 2 easily
  • 151: maximum of 3 stages--may not be able to actually attain 3, but can attain 2 easily
  • 184: maximum of 3 stages, and can attain 3 easily
  • 202: maximum of 3 stages
  • 215: maximum of 3 stages

Trick info per stage

I made a simple one easy stage trick.

Okay.

Queued command: tha

You hastily release the spell.
You read the thaumometer:
The background magic level in this area appears to be normal.

Gp used was 37 + 4 = 40.

Through lots adding/removing of other spells and squints (takes 4 head space) I obtained a size for 1 easy stage of 2.

As expected for such low size it doesn't make any thaum when cast.

Holding a charged Klein bottles to get int bonuses allows you to increase your head space which can be handy.

Then I made a two easy stages trick.

sb

Queued command: sb

Hp: 2258(2258) Gp: 367(423) Xp: 264245 Burden: 30%

Gp used was 423 - 371 + 8 = 60 or on the second run 423 - 367 + 4 = 60. This seems to suggest that there is a base cost of 20 gp plus 20 gp per easy stage.

A total of 4 of mind space works after verification.

It didn't produce any thaums, so it must be doing floor(4 / 5) = 0.

Then I made a three easy stages trick.

sb
c Testing Three Easy
Hp: 2258(2258) Gp: 423(423) Xp: 283390 Burden: 30%

Okay.

Queued command: tha

You hastily release the spell.
You read the thaumometer:
The background magic level appears to be one thaum above normal.

Gp used was 423 - 351 + 8 = 80. So 20 gp + 20 x 3 stages = 80 works.

A total of 6 of mind space works after verification.

It produced a thaum, which works with floor(6 / 5) = 1.

Gp used was 423 - 387 + 4 = 40 gp.

A total of 12 of mind space works after verification.

It produced 2 thaums, which works with floor(12 / 5) = 2.

A total of 16 of mind space works after verification.

It produced 3 thaums, which works with floor(16 / 5) = 3.

Skill checks for setting a trick in stone

  • There are 2 skills confirmed by mock to be used in this stage: convoking and talisman
  • By lowering my wis, I was able to lower talisman without lowering convoking, and was able to fail with 150 bonus, and succeed with 191 bonus.
  • The failure message for this check was: The large round stone shudders alarmingly.

Another witch, Suyin, failed with convoking..... 50 195 and talisman........ 100 202, getting the message: The large round stone slips out of your mental grasp.

I mocked her to talisman........ 100 250, still getting the same message, and mocked again, getting convoking..... 50 225, still failing.

More science is required to draw conclusions.
