NOTE: As of September 9th, 2013, tanning was tweaked. Prices as per research below may no longer be valid. Additionally, difficulty in tanning/dyeing for skins was changed.

Post-Sept. 19, 2013

[Most recent update Groth 04:19, 20 January 2014 (UTC)]

  • The price a tanned hide will be bought for is based upon two things - (1) final tanned weight and (2) tanning quality. Therefore, there are no longer "small", "medium", or "large" hide size classes. In general, the heavier the tanned hide, the more it will sell for.

Tanning Quality

  • Level 1 - Badly, Messily, Sloppily, Incompetently, Carelessly, Poorly
  • Level 2 - Acceptably, Competently, Properly
  • Level 3 - Nicely, Well, Smoothly, Evenly, Skilfully
  • Level 4 - Expertly, Beautifully, Elegantly

General Store

  • Prices quite low. Only weight appears to matter - i.e., same product price regardless of quality (but more research needed).
    • No table or graph until have more cells filled in.

Tanning Shop

  • Better prices than a general store. Output price dependent upon product weight and quality.
  • Data is best represented by the value in wibi for precision (convert money <value> to Howondaland). When valuing from a tannery, the value is likely computed in wibi, and then converted to local currency. This currency conversion always rounds down. Since Ephebian currency has a minimum value of 2 wibi, it can undercount value by at most 1 wibi, and is the best choice for valuing in game. Lancre currency has a minimum value of 3 wibi, and is the second best choice. Ankh-Morpork currency has a minimum value of 4 wibi, and is the least accurate measure of value.
  • Table below constructed by weighing tanned item at the AM Post Office, selling at the Ephebe leather shop, then converting to wibi
    • Q1: Baseline: w0 = Floor(Sqrt(9*weight)); 279*weight + (w0 - Floor((2*w0-1)/7) - 1)^3 + 99 (Roughly, 75 cents per pound)
    • Q2: 1.2 * Baseline
    • Q3: 1.3 * Baseline
    • Q4: 1.4 * Baseline
  • Dyeing values are a simple multiplier on the tanned value. Note that the worst quality dyeing will *REDUCE* the value!
    • Q1: Value * 0.9
    • Q2: Value * 1.3
    • Q3: Value * 1.7
    • Q4: Value * 1.9

Other

  • Weight of tanned products is precisely 1/2 untanned weight, rounded down to the nearest 1/9lb.
  • The act of tanning a hide has changed too. Research still needed. Weight and size still appear to affect success. Unsure how final tan weight falls into it, or if the tanned weight is randomized within a certain species-specific weight range.
  • Finally remembered IRL that brains can be used for tanning. And, guess what? Brains (any type) can be used to add uses to a tanning kit. Further research needs to be done to determine if a brain just provides a set number of uses, or if larger brains (i.e., rat vs human) give proportionally more uses.
