Altars

Blind Io (Philosopher's Walk altar): ...?...tried to offer an eye, but received a runtime error....

I've managed to sacrifice a hen to "io" without problems. Sacrificing to "blind io" gave me a runtime error. Terappi 06:41, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Reebox: NOT a pair of sandals or laurel wreath

Zephyrus: NOT feathers or incense

Astoria: probably anything which has 'rose' in the description (rose works, in addition to the rose himation noted in the main page)

Reebox also doesn't accept the javelin or jar of muscle oil sold in the shop across the road from it. --Ilde (talk) 23:25, 16 June 2016 (EDT)

-*-*-*-*-

Note: may need either a faith check to successfully use an altar, else not be a wizard. While testing what may be acceptable to Astoria -

You carefully set the dark rose in pride of place on the marble altar.
You spread your arms dramatically and loudly proclaim that no god is greater than Great Offler of
the Bird-Haunted Mouth. Oh dear, that's not right.
You get the impression that your offering was not well-received, and quickly remove it from the
marble altar.
You feel the probing gaze of Astoria in your soul, and the magic within you rises up defensively.
You hear a divine snort, and feel that you have made little impression.
You feel Astoria did not deign to notice your offering.

However, on the upside, there was no punishment...Groth 07:16, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

Tried to donate money to see if that might help standing:

You place 4 Ephebian decadrachmae, some Ephebian stater, some Ephebian drachmae, some Ephebian
oboli, some Ephebian hemioboli and some Ephebian derechmi in the donation tray attached to the
high altar.
You say a prayer for Flatulus, God of the Winds, over the donation.
You feel the probing gaze of Flatulus in your soul, and the magic within you rises up
defensively. You hear a divine snort, and feel that you have made little impression.
The winds are still.

Obvious, it did not. Note that I had previously donated similar sums of money with the same result. Offering the appropriate altar item also continues to not impress. Still unsure if it is a magic vs faith thing, or if there is a faith check that I'm bombing. Groth 03:37, 12 December 2013 (UTC)

Same result with a witch. However, the attitude can be slightly different:

You carefully set the lump of coal in pride of place on the high altar.
You spread your arms dramatically and loudly proclaim that no god is greater than Great Offler of the Bird-Haunted Mouth. Oh dear, that's not right.
You get the impression that your offering was not well-received, and quickly remove it from the high altar.
You feel the probing gaze of Cubal in your soul, and the magic within you rises up defensively.
You hear a divine snort, and feel that you have made little impression.
Cubal's attitude is lukewarm towards you.

As you can also donate money to a deity I now wonder whether that would be an alternative path to make the deity more inclined towards you. --Gunde 22:41, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

Now I tried with a thief, Sandelfon follower in theory, but currently too good for it:

You carefully set the big rose gold himation in pride of place on the marble altar.
You spread your arms dramatically and loudly proclaim that no god is greater than Patina, Goddess of Wisdom. Oh dear, that's not right.
You get the impression that your offering was not well-received, and quickly remove it from the marble altar.
You feel the wrathful eyes of Astoria upon you.
The voice of Astoria, Goddess of Love, whispers in your head: " As you are blind to what pleases me, so shall you be blind to all."
The world goes black! You are blind.

The blindness lasted for less than two minutes.

With a red rose the result was slightly different the first time round (but not the second time):

You carefully set the red rose in pride of place on the marble altar.
You spread your arms dramatically and loudly proclaim that no god is greater than Bast, Queen of Cats. Oh dear, that's not right.
You get the impression that your offering was not well-received, and quickly remove it from the marble altar.
You feel the wrathful eyes of Astoria upon you.
You feel the attention of a higher being watching your every move.

Any ideas? --Gunde 21:55, 14 December 2013 (UTC)

Maybe faith.items.scroll? --RiverPhoenix 23:00, 14 December 2013 (UTC)

I'm guessing wildly that it might be some magic skill can protect you from bad results, at least if you're a wizard or a witch, I'd guess abjuring or ma.sp.sp.
Testing with a new wizard/witch with no skills should show if it's a skill or just guild.
For the faith skill to offer items, based on other uses, it could also be faith.rituals.special, seems like faith.items.scroll is mostly for wards...
--Frazyl 20:06, 15 December 2013 (UTC)
Can confirm that the altars need faith.rituals.special to work. I bumped up mine to about 170 bonus (level 50) and attempted to sacrifice, again, something on an altar. Was successful with the sacrifice - received the minor sacrifice achievement (even as my wizard character was rejected for any other reward). Also got
You have a sudden insight into how to get the attention of the gods.
Hskills confirmed that the fa.ri.sp. Groth 01:43, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

Altars (Sacrifice)

  • Animals from Zevgatis' stall must be led to an altar. This requires a crafts.husbandry.animal.grooming skill check.
  • Animals from Zevgatis' stall can be bought with a harness, which presumably increases the probability to lead the critter.
  • The harness can slip from the animal, then be used on other appropriate animals around the city.
  • Yes = chicken, goat
  • No = rat, cat, sparrow, seagull, tortoise, donkey

GP

  • Leading a hen, goat around seems to use 4 GP per room.
  • Tying a hen, goat to an altar uses 10 GP.
  • Sacrificing a hen uses 80 GP in total.
  • Sacrificing a goat seems to use 120 GP in total.
  • Sacrificing a calf uses 240 GP in total.

Cooldown

  • Was able to successfully sacrifice at about 15 minutes between attempts, but not at (approx) 10 minute mark. Note: did get success message, but also
A divine voice mutters "Back so soon? Can't you spell weavers leave us in peace for just a few minutes?"
No additional sacrifices were added on the relevant Achievement count. Groth 23:05, 20 June 2015 (UTC)

Bonuses

  • A 141 bonus in crafts.husbandry.animal.slaughtering is enough to successfully pass the slaughter check for hens, the occasional goat, but not enough for calves. 172 is good enough for calves.
  • A 164 bonus in faith.rituals.special is enough for hens only. Bumping it up to around 180 allowed me to occassionally pass the fa.ri.sp check for sacrificing goats.
    • About 205 starts to pass calves.
  • A 131 bonus in crafts.husbandry.animal.grooming is good enough for reliably tying animals to altars, and for leading all 3 animals around (with or without harnesses).

Altars (alignment)

After making various sacrifices to various gods, I suddenly found that I was "very evil". Unfortunately I didn't really keep track of how I got that way... after getting myself back to neutral, I went to Astoria's altar and made some offerings, one at a time, with the following results:

  • 1 rose scented candle: good
  • another rose scented candle: quite good
  • another rose scented candle, too soon to get another reward: still quite good
  • another rose scented candle, too soon to get another reward: still quite good
  • attempted to steal from the altar: still quite good
  • successful offering of rose scented candle: still quite good

With a different character (who can detect alignment on self while good), starting out 26 good:

  • after one offering: 25 good
  • after second offering: 23 good
  • after third offering: 18 good
  • after fourth offering: 18 good still
  • after fifth offering: 18 good still

So, that's a pretty strange pattern, with the amount of alignment change increasing as you get closer to the "target"! That's the opposite of how prayer and I think killing things works. I'm not sure what's going on there.

Hypothesis: it probably takes you towards the deity in question's ideal alignment. Alignments of priests of various faiths in Ephebe:

  • Aegadon: neutral x3
  • Astoria: 17 good
  • Bast:
  • Cubal: 11 evil, 16 evil, 26 evil
  • Flatulus: 2 evil
  • Io:
  • Offler: 28 good, 32 good, 34 good, 38 good, 39 good
  • Patina:
  • Reebox: 6 good
  • Zephyrus: neutral

Busted: Offler's priests are extremely good, but sacrificing to Offler doesn't move me away from neutral.

Resulting alignment from offerings to various deities, starting from neutral (331 fa.ri.sp):

Deity sacrificed one goat offered one item sacrificed one chicken sacrificed one calf
Aegadon 3x neutral, no apparent change
Astoria (can't sacrifice animals)
Bast quite evil
Cubal 2x very evil barely evil (1 degree); 2x neutral (Sandelfon "pleased")
Flatulus barely evil (2 degrees)
Io 2x neutral, no apparent change neutral, no apparent change
Offler neutral, no apparent change neutral, no apparent change
Patina good ranges from barely good (1 degree) to good neutral (Sandelfon "pleased")
Reebox quite good (item unknown)
Zephyrus 3x neutral, no apparent change (item unknown) 3x neutral, no apparent change

When they reject the offering because it's too soon, there's no change in alignment.

Offerings of items

Offering different types of books to Patina to see if there's any appreciable difference. (All books were shoplifted. I hope she doesn't care!)

  • prayer book worth $25, weighing 1 lb: Clarify lasting 71 seconds. Neutral to: barely good, Sandelfon concerned (rit penalty).
  • prayer book worth $25, weighing 1 lb: +1 int for 10 minutes. Neutral to: barely good (1 degree) (no rit penalty).
  • small cream dictionary worth 4Rh 20s, weighing 2/9 lb: Clarify for 116 seconds. Neutral to: good
  • small cream dictionary worth 4Rh 20s, weighing 2/9 lb: Clarify for 91 seconds. Neutral to: good
  • small cream dictionary worth 4Rh 20s, weighing 2/9 lb: Clarify for 60 seconds. Neutral to: barely good (1 degree) (Sandelfon concerned)
  • Fung Shooey book worth 2Rh 10s, weighing 4/9 lb: Clarify for 63 seconds. Neutral to: barely good (1 degree) (Sandelfon pleased)
  • Fung Shooey book worth 2Rh 10s, weighing 4/9 lb: +1 Wis for 10 minutes. Neutral to: barely good (Sandelfon annoyed)
  • House Owner's Guide (small brown book) for 2s, weighing 1 1/9 lb: +1 wis for 10 minutes. Neutral to: barely good (Sandelfon annoyed)
  • House Owner's Guide (small brown book) for 2s, weighing 1 1/9 lb: Clarify for 82 seconds. Neutral to: barely good (Sandelfon annoyed)

Seems pretty random--both the reward and the alignment change. On that note, maybe the increasing alignment shift from offering things to Astoria before was just random coincidence.
