Descriptions of quilts themselves

This is to try to determine 1)how difficult it is to make different kinds of quilts (including whether it's easier or more difficult to make larger quilts), 2)whether the cr.ar.de skill might play any part, and 3)whether quilts need to be made of certain kinds of blocks to get certain results (this appears to be the case).

As it's been changed recently, old descriptions are in italics. New ones (and ones that are confirmed to still be makeable) aren't.

One Color Quilt Research

Nine identical plain (no pattern, appliqued) black cotton blocks resulted in a black cotton patchwork quilt:

This quilt has been carefully constructed from nine black cotton blocks. The choice of matching both colour and material gives the quilt a certain understated style.

Nine identical patterned white blocks resulted in a white patchwork quilt:

Someone has spent quite a lot of time selecting and sewing together the nine white blocks of this quaint patchwork quilt.
  • Rustic black patchwork quilt / black
1 patterned = black silk with white plum blossoms
8 normal = black cotton
  • Rustic black patchwork quilt / black
9 normal = 9 black cotton
Received three times...had lots of black cotton blocks to use

Two Color Quilt Research

If majority + 1 can return a <colour> quilt (and appropriate description), what about quilts with two colours in desciption? [for a rustic patchwork quilt - 2 white cotton with flowery print (patterned), 2 white cotton, 3 white silk, 2 green cotton]

Made from white and green blocks, it is obvious that some time has gone into the
construction of this rustic quilt. It would make quite an attractive feature in any bedroom.
  • Rustic patchwork quilt / deep blue and black
1 patterned = pleated cobalt blue
8 normal = 4 black cotton, 1 black linen, 1 deep blue linen, 1 earthy brown and cloud grey striped cotton, 1 yellow and black checked linen (last two are from a quilting mystery bag, and long/short descriptions same)
Perhaps color #1 was the 5 (majority) black, then randomly picked the deep blue linen?
  • Rustic patchwork quilt / white and blue
9 normal = 8 white linen, 1 blue cotton
  • Decorative patchwork quilt / white and fawn
9 normal = 4 white cotton, 3 white linen, 2 fawn cotton
  • Rustic patchwork quilt / grey and white
9 normal = 3 white cotton, 2 white linen, 4 grey pinstripe cotton
  • Rustic patchwork quilt / beige and white
9 normal = 4 white linen, 3 white cotton, 2 beige cotton
  • Cotton patchwork quilt / green and black
9 normal = 3 green cotton, 6 black cotton
  • Decorative patchwork quilt / red and black
9 normal = 4 red silk, 2 red cotton, 3 black cotton
  • Decorative patchwork quilt / silver and black
9 normal = 5 silver cotton, 4 black velvet
  • Rustic patchwork quilt / red and black
9 normal = 4 black velvet, 5 red cotton
  • Rustic patchwork quilt / white and black
9 normal = 4 black cotton, 2 black silk, 3 white cotton
This rather quaint patchwork quilt has a colour scheme of <colour> and <colour> blocks.
  • Quaint patchwork quilt / white and red
1 patterned = tattered cotton
8 normal = red silk

CONCLUSION - TWO-COLOR QUILT DESCRIPTIONS

Since change...

1. For a two-tone quilt description, blocks can be all regular, all pattern, or a mix thereof

2. The order of colors in the description is likely random (i.e., majority block color does not necessarily come first)

3. One color must have at least 5 blocks of same shade, although not necessarily same material. Second color randomly chosen from remaining colors.

Other

  • It has seemed that as cr.ma.ne has increased, have more often received quilts with <colour> (single or double) in the description. At about 204 bonus, maybe 75-80% at this time? [Groth]

The notes below may or may not still be relevant, as the bug that was giving quilts inappropriate descriptions was fixed. Apparently, "You now need to have at least half + 1 of the blocks as the same (and only) colour for it to show in the short." (I made a few quilts myself to see if I could get one of those, but didn't end up with any quilts that had the colour or material in the short description.) It may or may not matter whether the blocks you're using are new ones or old ones that you stockpiled.

New quilt description. Unsure why it gave a specific colour: only two blocks of the 9 block (all appliqued) quilt - position 7 and 8 - were cobalt blue. There were multiple other colours as well (several red silk, blue silk, and so forth). Perhaps setting same coloured blocks in specific positions or patterns creates different descriptions? Or it could be bonus dependent?

  • Got it again, this time 2 cobalt blocks at the 4 and 5 spots
  • Variation on quilt - 'decorative patchwork quilt' - ...orange and cobalt blue blocks... - orange silk blocks at positions 1/3/4/5 and cobalt blue at 7/8. Theory: two blocks of same color on same row (1-3, 4-6, 7-9) can create a colored quilt? And if more than one color, then color is not seen in the short item description. Addendum: the blocks must be 'special' with longer descriptions? - i.e., cobalt blue are actually pleated cobalt blue from hakamas and orange silk are torn from akomes. Must test!
    • Tried to make a quilt with 1 pleated blue and 8 misc cotton/velvet black blocks. Received a decorative cobalt blue patchwork quilt. Maybe only need 1 'special' block in a quilt? Block was at position 9.
    • Tested with 1 orange silk (from akome) block in a quilt with 8 other various non-special blocks. Received a decorative orange patchwork quilt. Block was at position 2.
  • It does appear that inclusion of at least 1 'special' block can give a different quilt description. Need to test with other than the pleated blue blocks and orange silk akome blocks.
    • Tested with another 'special' block - velvet covered in ankhstones block (red velvet block), from Fancy Ringmaster's Jacket - again, minimum of 1 inclusion results in 'Made from red blocks..." quilt
    • Note that red and blue flannel blocks (red blocks - farmers, others) appear to be an exception to this rule. Obviously not special enough.
  • Variation received - a cobalt blue cotton patchwork quilt - utilizing special blocks and 'cotton'. Be aware that while the quilt was all cotton, it was also only 2 pleated cobalt blue blocks, not 9, despite what the desc says.
    • I got the following, made entirely from white cotton blocks from a patched floral towel ("This quilting block is made from white cotton printed with a floral design."):
Made from white blocks, it is obvious that some time has gone into the construction of this decorative quilt. It would make quite an attractive feature in any bedroom.
    • ETA: And a similar one (but rustic), this time with only two patterned blocks (position 3 and 4) and with twelve blocks. The rest, unpatterned cotton.
    • Another ("indigo patchwork quilt"): "Someone has spent quite a lot of time selecting and sewing together the nine indigo blocks of this quaint patchwork quilt." Composition: six black cotton blocks, two pale indigo silk blocks, one block that was made from indigo silk spotted with silver stars (position 5).

Additionally, received a "cotton patchwork quilt" (desc type - Made of nine blocks...), but "cotton" did not follow through into the long description. Nine blocks, 7 of which were [black] cotton, all quilt blocks appliqued.

I got a "cotton patchwork quilt" as well, but with a worse description (Made from twelve blocks, this patchwork quilt, while not a work of art by any stretch of the imagination, will serve its purpose as a bed covering or, perhaps, a pet's blanket). Mine was made entirely of plain cotton blocks. ETA: And a similar "flannel patchwork quilt", twelve plain "white flannel" blocks.
  • Tried with orange akome blocks paired with otherwise silk blocks. Received "orange silk patchwork quilt" for the 'understated style' description.
  • Perhaps 'attractive feature' quilt is at least one pattern block mixed with different materials?
  • Perhaps 'understated style' quilt is at least one pattern block and all one material?
  • Perhaps normal quilts with <material> as an adjective are all one material?
  • And the other adjectives (pretty, lovingly crafted, etc) are random
  • Additional: it is still possible to receive the standard quilt descriptions even when one or more patterned blocks are included - maybe fail some sort of design or other check

Footnotes

  1. Range of needlework bonuses the result has been achieved with.
  2. Sometimes these have embroidery patterns or applique patterns instead.
  3. Range of bonuses it's been achieved with.
  4. Range of bonuses it's been achieved with.
  5. "Plain" means blocks that aren't appliqued, embroidered, or special blocks (souvenir blocks or blocks sold in the "special blocks" category in shops). "Plain" blocks may however be ones that were torn from clothing, but have some kind of pattern printed on them (this wasn't noted at first) or something like that. "(patterned)" indicates those, "(regular)" indicates ordinary-looking plain blocks, and "(?)" means it wasn't kept track of.
