Getting started

To begin making quilts you'll need a few items:

And, optionally:

  • sharp scissors (if you are making appliques)
  • an applique pattern book (to make appliques for your blocks)
applique applique to block with quilting needle
  • a quilting pattern book (to quilt your quilts once they're made)

You can get these items from the quilting shop in Slice or the needlework store in AM. Quilting blocks can also be made by tearing up clothes.

>tear towel into quilting blocks
You tear the large white towel into six quilting blocks.

Quilting blocks can be further customized by embroidering them, sewing appliques to them, or (for blank ones) marbling them.

Joining Quilting Blocks

You need a couple of quilting blocks, some thread and a quilting needle to start making a quilt. Sewing two blocks together (with a threaded quilting needle) will create an incomplete patchwork quilt. You can then continue to sew blocks on until you sew the final block on. Complete quilts have either 9 or 12 quilting blocks in them (determined by whether you sew the final block on when you sew the ninth block on, or the twelfth), and you can count the blocks in a complete or incomplete quilt with 'count blocks in quilt'. It takes 30 crafts gp to sew blocks together.

>sew block to quilt with quilting needle
You confidently start to sew your white cotton quilting block to your incomplete patchwork quilt.
You finish sewing the incomplete patchwork quilt.
>count blocks in quilt
There are three blocks in the incomplete patchwork quilt.

For the final block:

>sew final block to quilt with quilting needle
You confidently start to sew your white cotton quilting block to your incomplete patchwork quilt.
You finish sewing on the final block and admire your pretty patchwork quilt.
>count blocks in quilt
There are nine blocks in the pretty patchwork quilt.

In the final quilt, the blocks will be numbered, so that you can "view block 1 in quilt" and so on. The order in which you add them is their numbering order. If you "sew red block to green block with needle" and then "sew blue block to quilt with needle", then "block 1" will be the red block", "block 2" will be the green block, and "block 3" will be the blue block in the final quilt.

Quilting

Optionally, you can further decorate your finished quilt by quilting it. This uses the crafts.materials.needlework skill.

Most quilting patterns seem to require 3 threads. You therefore need to quilt them 3 times to complete them.

>hold quilting needle
You hold a quilting needle in your left hand.
>get thread from spool
You pull a tan silk thread from the thread spool.
>thread quilting needle with thread
You thread the quilting needle with the tan silk thread.
>quilt quilt with pattern from quilting pattern book with quilting needle
You confidently start to quilt your pretty patchwork quilt.
You reach the end of your thread and tie a knot in it, noting that there is still some work to be done on the pattern.

A quilt may only have one quilting pattern quilted on it, but you can unpick it with an embroidery unpicker to get rid of it if you want to try again.

Quilts

The final quilt is a piece of hanging furniture. The description varies; some possible results are:

Adjective(s) Description Sizes
large, small Made from <size> blocks, this patchwork quilt, while not a work of art by any stretch of the imagination, will serve its purpose as a bed covering or, perhaps, a pet's blanket. 9 or 12
hand-made, quaint, rustic, small While obviously not made by a master needleworker, this quilt has no doubt taken someone many hours to create. It is made of <size> rather quaint blocks. 9 or 12
quaint This rather quaint patchwork quilt has a colour scheme of <colour> and <colour> blocks. 9 or 12
quaint Some time has gone into the selection and sewing of the <size> blocks that make up this patchwork quilt. 9 or 12
hand-made, quaint, rustic, small Made of <size> blocks, this patchwork quilt has a certain rustic feel to it. It would look quite nice atop a bed in a country cottage or hanging from the wall of a city house. 9 or 12
decorative, lovingly crafted, pretty, rustic This <adjective> patchwork quilt is made up of <size> blocks, each sewn together carefully to create an interesting design. 9 or 12
decorative, lovingly crafted, pretty, <colour> Someone has spent quite a lot of time selecting and sewing together the <size> [colour] blocks of this <adjective> patchwork quilt. 9 or 12
[decorative, rustic] <colour>   research If this has been marked on a page, it's because there was something that probably isn't known, that the person who edited the page thinks could be found out. Perhaps you could figure this thing out, and be famous evermore.  Made from <color> blocks, it is obvious that some time has gone into the construction of this decorative quilt. It would make quite an attractive feature in any bedroom. 9 or 12
attractive, sophisticated A lot of time must have gone into making this lovely patchwork quilt which is made up of twelve blocks. The quality of each block is high and the quilt itself is quite <adjective>. It would be equally at home in an art gallery or hanging from the wall of a stately mansion. 9 or 12

Additional Adjectives

An additional <material> adjective may be added to the title of any quilt. For instance: "rustic silk patchwork quilt". To receive a <material> adjective, all blocks of a quilt must be made of the same material. Silk, cotton, linen, and flannel have all been reported.

A <material> adjective is not always bestowed when all materials are the same. It is unknown at this time if more experienced quilters are more likely to receive a <material> adjective than less.

A <colour> adjective may also be added if all the blocks are of the same colour.

Other

If a quilt has been quilted, there will be an additional line underneath describing the pattern it was quilted with.

You can view the individual blocks of a quilt, as well--whether or not it's complete. You can do this whether a quilt is in your inventory, on the ground, or placed as furniture.

view block <number> [of|on|in] <quilt>
view random block [of|on|in] <quilt>

The description you see is the same as the block's description before it was added to the quilt--although if the block was embroidered, the line break before the description of the embroidery will be gone, and if it was embroidered with text, it will show what the text says.
