A paint-stained wand aka wand of colouring is an artifact that covers the target in paint.

Long Description

You recognise the paint-stained wand to be a wand of colouring. The wand is covered in pearl grey paint making it impossible to tell what type of wood it's made of.
It looks like it could be refilled from a tin of paint.
It emits a slight octarine glow.

Appraises As

The paint-stained wand is about nine inches long and an inch wide. It is made of wood and could be used as a weapon of type mace.

Usage

To use a paint stained wand, hold it and "zap" it at the target. The target will get a line added to their description:

He appears to be covered in <colour> paint.

The colour of the paint is the same as the colour the wand is covered with.

Zapping someone with multiple colours gives this result:

He appears to be covered in multicoloured paint.

This will last for a few minutes or so, with paint dripping off occasionally.

You can zap yourself or another human.

It can be dodged:

You aim the paint stained wand at Stren Withel.
A stream of sparks shoots out of your paint stained wand. Stren Withel just twists out of the way of the sparks and they whistle past its ear.
You try to zap Stren Withel with the paint stained wand.

It's possible for zapping it to fail without using up any charges:

You try and use the paint stained wand but it's covered in wet paint and doesn't do anything.
You cannot zap yourself with a paint stained wand.

It's not clear what causes this.  research If this has been marked on a page, it's because there was something that probably isn't known, that the person who edited the page thinks could be found out. Perhaps you could figure this thing out, and be famous evermore.

It can also backfire on you:

You are covered in sticky bronze paint!
You lose control of the wand.
A shower of sparks leaves the paint stained wand and covers you in bronze paint.
you fail to zap <person> with the paint stained wand.

Acquisition

Paint stained wands are sold at:

  • Hobliet the Unnecessary's Linear Tools Shop in the Magical Supplies Emporium on Sator Square in Ankh-Morpork.
  • Twingo's Twisted Trinkets stall in the middle of Sator Square.

A wand with 21 charges is about $6.02.

Refilling

This artifact can be refilled rather than recharged. You need a tin of paint to do this.

refill <wand> from <tin>

Doing this uses up all the paint in the tin, and changes the colour of the wand's effect to the colour of the paint used. It takes no gp.

Packets of glitter available from Mr Foo's Bargain Basement Hall of Paint in North-Westerly Bes Pelargic may be added to the paint before refilling the wand. The wand will appear as "The wand is covered in glittery colour paint". Zapping it at someone will add the description "He appears to be covered in glittery colour paint."
