Launder is an innate command used on stolen items in a launder room. It costs 5 crafts gp.

Use
Successfully laundering a stolen item will alter any identifiable marks on an item, thereby removing its stolen status and allowing it to be sold at a general store. Depending on how well you launder, you may raise or lower the value of the item or even destroy it.
The item's value and the number of times it's been laundered before determines the difficulty of the task. A thief can value something to try to determine number of times it has been laundered. Keep in mind that laundering a damaged item is just as difficult as (or more difficult than) laundering the same item in excellent condition. Thus, it would be wise to fix or mend something before laundering it.
In order to use this command, you must be in a launder room (there's one in the guild in Ankh-Morpork and another in Genua's guild) and cannot have fines to pay.
Skills
The skills used for laundering something depends on the item's material. Appraising an item will determine what it's made of.
The skills are:
- Crafts.materials.needlework for non-leather clothing
- Crafts.materials.leatherwork for leather things
- Crafts.smithing.black.armour for metal armour
- Crafts.smithing.gem.polishing for gems
- Crafts.smithing.gold or crafts.smithing.silver for jewellery
- Crafts.smithing.black.weapons for weapons
Messages
There are a few messages you can see upon laundering an item, depending on your success.
Non-leather clothing, from worst to best:
- You attempt to modify the design of the <item> somewhat. Due to your spectacular lack of skill you manage to cut it in half. You regretfully throw the <item> in the rubbish bin. (item is destroyed)
- You attempt to modify the design of the <item> somewhat. Due to your lack of skill you end up modifying it to fit like a glove, with enough fingers for an entire family of octopodes. Oh well, at least it's still usable. (value decreases)
- You modify the design of the <item> somewhat. It doesn't look bespoke, but you think you did a good job overall.
- You modify the design of the <item> somewhat. You handle the needle with such exceptional skill that it couldn't have been done better by a professional seamstress. Er, needlewoman. (value increases)
- You modify the design of the <item> somewhat. Due to your skill it looks like something straight off a catwalk. (value increases)
