Gods

From Discworld MUD Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search

On Discworld, gods are created and thrive on belief. Small gods only have a little bit of belief, either being new or having lost all worshippers and being little more than echoes of voices in the desert wind.

Worshippable deities

The following are the deities that priests can serve and everyone else except witches and wizards can be followers and worship them.

  • One can only serve or worship a single deity.

These deities, while not being the most powerful, have enough faith, power and interest in attracting more worshippers that they grant rituals to those who feed them with belief.

Pishe, Goddess of Slight Showers The goddess Pishe is focused upon growth and regeneration. Her slight showers are ideal for the proliferation of plants, which in turn nurture animals and people. Her priests and priestesses often live peaceful lives, devoted to the protection of the living things which Pishe loves so dearly. She is generally viewed as the matron of healers, herbalists, and anyone else that shares Her love of growth. The commandments of Pishe include: Be the vessel through which My showers of mercy rain down upon all of those in need, whether they ask it or not, for in bringing My mercy unto them, thou bringest thyself unto Me.  +3 barely good

Gufnork, God of Fluff As the God of Fluff, Gufnork and His priests enjoy an insulated life spent in meditation upon the softer aspects of life. Usually stereotyped as intellectuals with little care for worldly matters, followers of Gufnork have developed a reputation for standoffishness. Worshippers of Him often seek to improve the lives of others, so that more people will have the leisure and inclination to contemplate the glory of Gufnork. Gufnork's most important commandment is: Take My fluff throughout the world, and wherever the fluff be lacking, there spread My fluff thickest so that all may experience My fluff and sleep more comfortably upon it.  +3 barely good

Gapp, God of Fine Clothing Often considered an elitist, Gapp and His priests make a point of being the best-dressed at any public function. The sense of style of His worshippers is as unquestionable as it is changeable, with new fashions tearing through His temples on a weekly basis. Gapp is a god who believes He is the best, and He knows how to dress properly for the position. The most important of Gapp's commandments include: Thou shalt not go forth unclothed like the lesser beasts, unless My High Priest doth send you forth thus on My behalf, for infractions against My church such as over-dressing when in the presence of one holier than thou.  0 neutral

Sandelfon is often worshipped by politicians, lawyers, bureaucrats, and administrators, whether their intentions be selfless or not. Sandelfon's primary commandment is: If, in the greater or lesser scheme of things, thou or someone else doth see, or hear of, or think of a way in which a government, restaurant, organisation, or other undefined entity might be better managed and organized, thou, and whoever else is a worshipper unto Me, shall do their best to seek to improve the aforesaid government, restaurant, organisation, or other undefined entity, or petition to seek to improve the aforementioned if direct improvement is not possible or practical, and then thou shalt be among the most beloved of My children, unless sufficient other parties have completed such a task in a superior manner.  -4 evil

Generally free spirited, the followers of Hat frequently express their piety by travelling to new places, meeting new people, and engaging in new experiences. In keeping with his vulture-like nature, Hat can spot a good party, opportunity for mischief, or tasty corpse from miles away. Among Hat's most valued commandments is: Surprise them, before they surprise thee, lest I visit upon thee a bigger surprise that thou shalt not like in the least for failing in thy duty to Me.  -9 quite evil

Fish's primary commandment is: Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's haddock, unless he covets thy haddock, in which case thou shalt take his haddock and smite him mightily with it, and then thou shalt eat both the haddocks to dispose of all evidence.  -2 barely evil

His followers usually share His drive for self-gratification and tend to enjoy doing whatever is necessary to take what they desire from someone else. Imbued with a natural sense of cruelty, Sek's worshippers frequently inflict misery upon others as a preferred method of showing their commitment to Him. The primary commandment of Sek is: Increase My glory by taking power for thyself from those who are less deserving of it, for the more power thou bringest unto Me, the more power I shall bestow unto thee, and thou shalt remain forever My most prized of servants.  -49 extremely evil

Ugizalizai, Lion-Headed God of Warriors Ugizalizai is the Lion Headed God of Warriors. He does not demand much from his followers, merely that they die bravely, and preferably violently, in battle. At least, this is what many great philosophers have reasoned; since all the ancient manuscripts have ever recorded Him saying is 'Ug!', and on one occasion 'Ugug-ug!'. This is what gives Him His name, which in an ancient dialect of Djelian means, "He who says 'Ug'". Gods not (yet) recognized

Some gods are not yet recognized (without a finger information) on the mud.

Narrativia, Goddess of Writing and Writers
She is the patron deity of Sir Terry Pratchett himself, who was having a statue made in Her honour.
The Lady
The Goddess Who Must Not Be Named, also known as The 'Million-to-One' Chance - and all of the other chances as well.
No Discworld God can change the nature of their own eyes, and hers are emerald green, without iris or pupil.
Mentioned in The Colour of Magic, Interesting Times and The Last Hero.
Fate
A most implacable god, it is possible (although difficult) to bargain with him, but proverbially impossible to cheat him, although this has been done before, notably by the Lady and Cohen in The Last Hero.
His eyes are starry voids.
He is said to come from a world other than the Disc.
Destiny
A god mentioned in The Colour of Magic. Possibly an anthropomorphic personification. Different from Fate, Destiny sees to it that young heroes meet their heroic destiny, while Fate backs winners, those ‘fated to win' and seem to have everything going for them.
Monolith
A mythic troll hero figure, a parody of Prometheus, he first wrested the secret of rocks from the gods (the secret being that you can hit someone with one).
Even though the famous human Fingers-Mazda (Thief of Fire) is usually credited with being the Disc's first thief, Monolith probably predates him considerably.
In Feet of Clay statues of Monolith are referred to as "troll religious statues", indicating that he is also some kind of demigod or similar. He is also mentioned in Moving Pictures.
Pedestriana, Goddess of feet and pedal dexterity
The goddess appears early and late in the events of Unseen Academicals to promote and direct the Beautiful Game which serves as a sacrament to her.
Bissonomy
She is currently an obscure Virtue, but according to Chaffinch, she was once a goddess and a consort of Blind Io.
Epidity, God of Potatoes
The patron deity of potatoes. Has the power to turn blasphemers in His sight into a shower of oysters.
In Making Money, there is passing reference to a potato-based religion requiring its devotees to wear symbolic golden tubers on a chain about their necks, which is beginning to gain ground in Ankh-Morpork, of which Mr. Tulip, and in the end Mr. Pin seemed to be believers.
He is celebrated in the month of Ember, which The Celebrated Discworld Almanak notes is the season of potato-harvesting just before winter.
Infernal Zoth, the Undying Renderer
A god who, due to his essential nature and uncompromising job description, may well have reduced himself to small god status by remorselessly wiping out his believers. His high spot might have been in 1547, when the order of monks bearing his name were wiped out by fire, lightning and a highly localised earthquake. Perhaps they contemplated the essential infernal nature of Zoth only too well...
The site of Zoth's former place of worship is now occupied by the Fools' Guild.
Iron Girder
The first steam locomotive on Discworld, becomes a goddess due to acquiring worshippers, in the form of trainspotters, in Raising Steam.
Night
A god for the easily impressed. Hard to see. Mentioned in The Colour of Magic.
Noddi
Creator god of NoThingfjord.
Nog-Humpty, Custard God
Mentioned in the Discworld's Assassins' Guild Yearbook and Diary 2000, Nog-Humpty the custard god is one for whom religion is a joking matter. Possibly associated with the Fools' Guild.
Pippina, Goddess of Chaos and Discord. Carries the Golden Apple of office.
Resonata, Goddess of Weasels
Saponaria, Goddess of Soap and Cleanliness
Mad Snake God
Its principal temple has the terrible Man-Eating Sloth of Clup guarding a giant ruby.
Anu-anu
A god shaped like a werewolf that appears as a character in the computer game Discworld Noir.
Originally worshipped in Klatch, where a temple dedicated to him still exists in Al-Khali. During the events of the game he has been reduced to small god status, physically reducing him to the form of a small dog, but his religion still existed in Überwald amongst werewolf clans. One of the proponents of the religion of Anu-anu was Ulrich von Überwald whose wife Carlotta helped to found a chapter in Ankh-Morpork.
Vometia
The ancient Ankh-Morporkian goddess of being sick. "To make an offering to Vometia..." means vomiting. Mentioned in The Last Hero.
Vomita
Possibly the Oh Goddess of vomiting and violent purging.

Dark Gods

Pratchett never makes the connection explicit, the dark gods of the Necrotelicomnicon are probably creatures from the Dungeon Dimensions that have found a way to survive in our universe.
Although possibly not proper gods, some might use belief to sustain themselves.
The names of the Dark Gods are often references to creatures from the Cthulhu Mythos.
Bel-Shamharoth
He is also known as the "Soul-Eater," the "Soul-Render," or the "Sender of Eight."
On the mud, should one shout the 7+1 number, one might be confronted with this entity (and directly logged out from the mud).
These days he is mostly remembered in the name of the Young Men's Reformed-Cultists-of-the-Ichor-God Bel-Shamharoth Association. His likeness is etched on the cover of the Octavo.
Yob Sodoth
Mentioned in Moving Pictures.
The Insider
Mentioned in Equal Rites.
C'hulagen
Mentioned in Equal Rites.
Nylonathetep
Mentioned in Discworld Noir.
