Escaped spells

Escaped spells manifest as (rather dangerous) forms of energy that makes many chats and remain inside the room where the spell escaped.

They can be released when trying to remember from scrolls or trying to educe from hag stones.

The resulting energy forms can be captured.

On April 10, 2011 the escaped energy changed to their current form to go with the Klein bottles used to capture them.

Forms and colours

The form of the energy is based on the mind space occupied by the spell or trick. In order:

Mind space Form
5 a tiny speck of energy
10 - 15 a small point of energy
20 - 25 a moderately-sized ball of energy
30 - 35 a large orb of energy
40 - 60 a substantial sphere of energy

The exact size of the spell can be measured with the use of a thaumometer.

The colour depends on the type of the escaped spell. Tricks are considered to be misc spells.

Random spell energies can be found wandering deep in the Unseen University library and in the Bes Pelargic Library.

Spells escaping from scrolls

Spells can sometimes escape when you're trying to remember them from scrolls.

Wizard spells seem to escape best when the spellsize and mindspace left are almost the same, ostensible because the less space left the harder it is to remember the spell.

This is what it looks like:

This particular sphere lasted for 7+1 minutes and 34 seconds.

The former scroll is left blank, but still in your inventory.

Illusions escaping from scrolls

It is unclear if illusions made with Torqvald's Illusion Generatrix work like tricks, but they probably do.  research If this has been marked on a page, it's because there was something that probably isn't known, that the person who edited the page thinks could be found out. Perhaps you could figure this thing out, and be famous evermore. 

Spells escaping from spellbooks

It has been stated by creators that it is no longer possible for spells to escape when trying to remember them from spellbooks.

Spells escaping from small hag stones

It is rather easy to have the spells escape when trying to educe from a small hag stones. Basically, even with a high bonus of magic.items.talisman it is nearly impossible to succeed educing a spell if you would have less than 5 mind space left after educing it.

When failing to educe, the hag stone might stay intact or it might explode.

To make the escaped spells rarer, only some stone explosions now release escaped energies in the room.

Tests with Granny Benedict's Bond of Loyalty showed 2 escaped energies in 10 exploded stones.

Tricks escaping from large hag stones

Tricks are like witch spells except you need to imbue them in large hag stones.

You can capture them in Klein bottles like normal spells.

Tricks are miscellaneous type spells.

Capturing escaped spells

It is possible to catch escaped spells in a Klein bottle.

To do this, you need to hold a (closed) klein bottle and you must hold a blue funnel, which is not a melee weapon.

There are likely some skillchecks that decide if this works or not. At least one component is a magic.spells.special check.

  • Upon marginal failure the energy does not attack, but critical failure has it move aggressively against you.
  • A marginal success results in a capture but does not inform you of which spell you captured. There is probably a large random element, as failures are often followed by full successes.
  • Having the bottle open releases the energy immediately but it does not attack.

A skilled capture goes as follows:

You confidently position the blue funnel between the Klein bottle and the substantial sphere of energy.  From your deep understanding of magic, you recognise it as energy released from the spell "Granny Benedict's Bond of Loyalty".  You aim the blue funnel squarely at the energy and begin capturing it.

Wispy tendrils extend from the substantial sphere of energy, attracted through the blue funnel and into your Klein bottle.  As the last of the tendrils are captured, the substantial sphere of energy vanishes with a "Pop!".
Your Klein bottle trembles and flickers pure blue briefly.

Note that as the bottle gives intelligence bonus it helps capturing subsequent energies.

A marginal capture goes as follows:

You position the blue funnel between the Klein bottle and the large orb of energy.  Drawing on your understanding of the arcane, you aim the blue funnel directly at the energy and begin to capture it.

Wispy tendrils extend from the large orb of energy, attracted through the blue funnel and into your Klein bottle.  As the last of the tendrils are captured, the large orb of energy vanishes with a "Pop!". 
Your Klein bottle trembles and flickers royal blue briefly.

On success escaped spells will be caught inside the klein bottle, unless it's too much pressure for in which case in which case it explodes.

A marginal failure observed went like this:

You position the blue funnel between the Klein bottle and the large orb of energy.  You draw on your knowledge of magic and attempt to capture the energy in the Klein bottle but just at the last moment it escapes you.

There was no immediate negative reaction from the spell and it was captured in the next attempt just afterwards.

A critical failure was also observed resulting in the spell attacking the user.

You clumsily position the blue funnel between the Klein bottle and the substantial sphere of energy.  As you attempt to capture the energy you lose your focus, the substantial sphere of energy moves aggressively towards you.

Escaped energy do not follow opponents into other rooms.

Trying to capture energy with the bottle open just releases it into the room peacefully but diminished in size. You can try to capture it again. The same happens if you open the bottle with energies inside.

You position the blue funnel between the Klein bottle and the substantial sphere of energy.  Drawing on your
understanding of the arcane, you aim the blue funnel directly at the energy and begin to capture it.

Wispy tendrils extend from the substantial sphere of energy, attracted through the blue funnel and into your Klein
bottle.  As the last of the tendrils are captured, the substantial sphere of energy vanishes with a "Pop!".
As your concentration wanes, you realise just too late that the Klein bottle was open.
The released energy shifts and combines to form an echo of its original spell.
A substantial sphere of energy is released from the confines of your Klein bottle.

Once escaped, energies wandered several rooms.

Escaped energies only last some ? minutes when loose in a room, before dissipating: (need to retest)  research If this has been marked on a page, it's because there was something that probably isn't known, that the person who edited the page thinks could be found out. The substantial sphere of energy shimmers out of existence.

Combat

If you get into combat with an escaped energy, beware that they do not deal normal attacks.

  • Instead, they deal direct energy damage that pass through all shields like they do not exist.
  • Armour and clothing get damaged from the damage so armour might absorb some amounts of damage.
You swat at the substantial sphere of energy with your butterfly net but its aura absorbs all of the blow.
The substantial sphere of energy lightly zaps you.
The substantial sphere of energy shocks you with a small lightning bolt.

The butterfly net now doesn't work with the capture command anymore and seems as ineffective as other melee attacks against the energies.
