# Engraving

Engraving allows you to use a graving tool to engrave patterns or text onto items made of metal, wood or glass, such as weapons and armour.

## Where and What

Engraving requires a steel graving tool. Patterns can be engraved from designs in engraving pattern books. Engraving equipment can be purchased in the dojo on Wung-Chi Lane in Bes Pelargic.

Engraving equipment and an additional pattern book can also be found at the Artificers Academy in Sto Lat. This also includes a silvery blue graving tool, which can be used to engrave items made of octiron and a diamond-tipped engraving tool for engraving items made of gemstone.

A steel polishing file can be used to remove engraved text or patterns from an item, damaging it slightly in the process.

## Pattern Details

Patterns come in various difficulties, requiring various engravings to complete.

Depending on the skill of the engraver, the resulting pattern can take one of eight forms - four levels of success, and four of failure.

Name
graving tool - used to engrave text or patterns on hard objects

Syntax
engrave text <string> on <object> {with|using} <object>
engrave pattern from <book> on <item> {with|using} <tool>
engrave text <string> on <object> {with|using} <object> in <language>

Description
The graving tool can be used to engrave messages on metal, wooden, or
glass objects. In order to engrave in a language, you need to have
some proficiency in it.

If you have an engraving pattern book, you can use it to add a pattern
to your item, if you turn it to the right page.

If you make a mistake you can remove the pattern with a special
polishing file, but that will damage the item. Engraved text can also
be removed.

The skill crafts.smithing.black.tools is the main one used for
patterns, but crafts.arts.design also helps. Engraving text uses
crafts.arts.calligraphy.
