Coffee Nostra jobs

From Discworld MUD Wiki

Warning.png WARNING: This page contains spoilers about Coffee Nostra jobs below the other spoiler warning.

Jobs or "special favours" are assigned upon request by the Cup 'o' Regime of the family.

You can do them once you've joined a Coffee Nostra family.

Duration

They have to be completed within an assigned amount of time (of roundworld hours) and you need to wait 6 roundworld hours after starting one job to be able to do another.

Difficulty

Unlike missions from Agatean families which are tailored to your abilities, these jobs may be rather impossible to do in the allotted time, especially since the Cup 'o' Regimes often get killed for exp as soon as they regen. The jobs can also require obtaining things that might be difficult to procure, like items made by players or sold in limited quantities.

Completion

You don't get an update right away when the job is finished if you don't have to give something to the Cup O' Regime to finish it, but if asked about "review" your Cup 'o' Regime will tell you "You're not supposed to be doing anything right now."

Some time after the mission is completed successfully you get some feedback:

You feel that the experience of working with the Coffee Nostra has made you a somewhat better person.

Joining the Coffee Nostra

The first "job", before the real jobs can be started, is to join the Coffee Nostra.

To do this you need to find the Cup 'o' Regime of the family you want to join, have a good enough reputation with the family and ask.

You ask: Can I join please?

Paulie Clemence eyes you speculatively.
Paulie Clemence asks: Yeah, I've heard of you. You've done us some good turns... I might
be willing to give you a shot. Are you sure you want to join the Coeur Lion family, tho'?

You say: yes

Paulie Clemence exclaims: Welcome aboard then!
Paulie Clemence says: Okay, I suppose I better give you a quick rundown on what you've
got yourself into. As far as you're concerned, the buck stops with myself, and the Consigliere of the
family. The chances are you'll never get to meet the Don of the family, unless you're very good indeed.
Most of the family have never met him, and that's just the way he likes it... the less people he deals
with, the less chance he has of being whacked.
Paulie Clemence says: Now you're one of us, you can come to me and see if there are any
jobs you can perform. If we have anything that needs done, you'll get the job. This is a handy way to
spend your time if you want to make a little extra cash, a little extra life experience, and a little
     extra reputation in the family.
Paulie Clemence says: If you want a job, just come to me and ask for one. If you forget
what the job was, you can ask me for a review. When you're done, you can collect your rewards from
     Stevie Cicone, nearby.
Paulie Clemence says: And that's about all I have to say about it. Welcome to the
     family.

Kill henchpeople

Just kill a number of henchpeople from the target family.

Apparently the casino security guards do not count as henchpeople, but the elegant gentleman guarding Albert Dimagio's office in the Racetrack does count and Albert Dimagio probably counts too.

There is no need to return to the Cup 'o' Regime for this mission to end.

Paulie Clemence whispers to you: Okay, this is how it breaks down. You're a pretty
talented gal, so we'd like to make use of those talents for our organisation, yes?
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: Okay, we need you to go break some heads for us. We
know you know how to handle yourself... or at least, we know you know people who can. The Corrola family
killed one of our hitmen. We want to send them a message they'll hear loud and clear.
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: Go wipe them out kid. Half a dozen at least. More if
     you can.
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: You have 3 hours.
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: Ah, you. You did good on your last mission, so the boss
wants you to deal with another little problem he has.
The Gumboni family
killed one of our hitmen. We want to send them a message they'll hear loud and clear.
Squelch.
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: Go wipe them out kid. Half a dozen at least. More if
     you can.
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: You have 3 hours.

[Around 35 minutes, 4 muscled men and 7 security guards later...]

You say: review
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: Alright, once more. You. Find. Members. Of. The.
Gumboni. Family. And. Kill. Them. They still haven't learned their lesson, should take another 2 corpses
to teach em. Hope you're better at killing than you are at remembering, because you've only got 144
     minutes left.

Recover money

You need to locate the NPC, obtain and then return the money owed to your Cup 'o' Regime.

The NPCs might be limited to the shops under your family's protection.
Kefka's Genua map with NPCs is helpful with locating NPCs.
Note the NPCs may also be located outside of Genua.
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: Ah, you. You did good on your last mission, so the boss
wants you to deal with another little problem he has.
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: Okay, we've got a vicious scumbag who is proving very
unwilling to pay us the money they borrowed from us. We would like you to go see Monsieur Aubert and,
you know, smack them around a bit. Capiche?
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: You have 1 hour and 40 minutes to do this. When you're
done, come back and tell me that you've collected the cash. There's a good kid... now amscray.

You smack Monsieur Aubert.
Monsieur Aubert exclaims: Hey, what's the big idea? Did someone from the Coeur Lion
     family send you?!
Monsieur Aubert exclaims: There was an earthquake and it destroyed my house!

You smack Monsieur Aubert.
Monsieur Aubert sobs quietly.
Monsieur Aubert exclaims: Okay, I'm sorry! I'll cough up the cash!
Monsieur Aubert fumbles around for a handful of livres.

You say: I've collected the cash
Paulie Clemence says: Good work kid, now let's see the money.
Paulie Clemence says: You did real good, kid... I'm proud of you.

Fetch poison

You need to obtain poison and return it to your Cup 'o' Regime.

This apparently will only accept assassin poisons. If you're not an assassin, with luck there might be some in a player shop somewhere.

  • Around one fourth of a phial is enough.
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: Ah, you. You did good on your last mission, so the boss
wants you to deal with another little problem he has.
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: Okay, this is how it breaks down. You're a pretty
talented gal, so we'd like to make use of those talents for our organisation, yes?
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: I'm sure you know a thing or two about poisons, yeah?
And I'm sure you're bright enough to know that poison can be very useful in our line of work. Got an
idea of what I want you to do?
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: You have 3 hours.

Paulie Clemence peers at a bright red apple.
Paulie Clemence asks: Kid, kid, kid, I've just had a newbie in who tried to convince me
to leave the family, and he was more persuasive than you. I want poison, p o i s o n, got it?

This tiny colourless glass phial has been inlaid with intricate steel carvings which hold a delicate
steel cap in place. Its elegance is deceptive as it is well made enough to take quite a beating.
The tiny colourless glass phial is about one-quarter full with five drops of sparkling purple syrup, mixed
with two drops of oily colourless liquid.
It is about one-quarter full.
It is open.

This is about five drops of some rather runny purple syrup. It looks almost effervescent, though it
seems doubtful that it would be refreshing if swallowed.
This is about two drops of some rather oily colourless liquid. It looks rather unpleasant and is giving off a
strong odour of mouse.

give phial to paulie
Paulie Clemence examines the tiny colourless glass phial.
Paulie Clemence says: Good work, kid! I'll see this gift is in vein.
Paulie Clemence rolls around on the floor laughing.

Paulie Clemence secretes the tiny colourless glass phial away.

In this job you have to locate and terminate the appropriate Cup 'o' Regime.

There is no need to return to the Cup 'o' Regime for this mission to end.

Paulie Clemence whispers to you: This is a tough mission kid... says a lot for you that
the boss thinks you're up to it.
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: Some bad stuff has gone down lately. Really bad
stuff... and we need to send a message to the Corrola family.
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: We want you to whack their Cup 'o' Regime. We don't
care how you do it... but it has to be you that does it. We need them to know that messing with our
family is just not on. Capiche?
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: You have 3 hours.

Fetch healing tea

In this job you need to get some "good stuff" healing tea and turn it in to your Cup 'o' Regime.

Healing tea made with a 325 bonus in magic.methods.physical.brewing was enough.

Paulie Clemence whispers to you: I'm sure you can imagine, people get cut up pretty badly
in this job. And obviously, we need to be able to fix them up as quickly as possible to get them back
doing the rounds. We go through a lot of medical supplies... and we really need some more brewed tea.
Good stuff, tho', none of this making love in a canoe rubbish. Go get us some.
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: You have 3 hours.

Paulie Clemence says: Now this is good stuff! Great work, kid.
Paulie Clemence secretes the large turquoise bottle away.
You give a large turquoise bottle to Paulie Clemence.

Fetch enchanted sword

You need to fetch a sword that's enchanted enough and give it to your Cup 'o' Regime.

  • Some weapons of type sword do not work, perhaps because you cannot refer to them as "sword".
  • An enchanted heavy-sword worked.
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: What the boss wants is a nice weapon to give one of our
hitmen. Something to give him the edge against the tougher guys, capiche? So you have to go get us a
sword, in mint condition, that has a good whack of enchantment on it. And don't try to trick us... I've
been pinching magic stuff since before you were born, so I know what I'm looking for.
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: You have 3 hours.

Paulie Clemence says: No, no, no. a slender blade doesn't look much like a sword to me.

Paulie Clemence says: Stink needs to glow more if you want us to accept it.
You offer to give Stink to Paulie Clemence.

l Wyrm sword
This great sword looks like a fine prize and could prove very useful in battle if you're tough enough to wield it. It is made of an octiron and is very durable. Its handle is made of platinum and has a stylised engraving of a dragon.
It radiates pure octarine brilliance.
It is in excellent condition.

give Wyrm sword to Paulie
Paulie Clemence says: Ah ha, great! Thanks, kid.
You offer to give the Wyrm Sword to Paulie Clemence.
Paulie Clemence secretes the Wyrm Sword away.
You give the Wyrm Sword to Paulie Clemence.

Fetch blue crystal ring

In this job you need to get a blue crystal ring with a "useful" number of charges and give it to your Cup 'o' Regime.

  • If the identify on the ring I gave was accurate, then that amount is at least one charge.
  • In another assignment, 3 charges was too less, a blue ring with 5 charges was accepted.
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: Sometimes even our best hitmen need an edge in combat.
Something to give them a little bit of an extra boost when needed. So we want you to bring us a blue
ring with enough charges to make it useful. Capiche?
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: You have 3 hours.

The blue crystal ring (keeping) ("1c recall") is in a pocket in the long black hooped skirt.

  • Trying to give a ring of energy with 3 charges failed but one with 4 charges worked.
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: Sometimes even our best hitmen need an edge in combat.

Paulie Clemence whispers to you: Right, here's what we want you to do. We have something
we need to be delivered to a friend of ours. Make sure you don't get pinched and hurry, our friend would
like this merchandise delivered before 1 hour and 40 minutes have passed. Capiche?
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: The name is Buic Kressley. Hurry.
Paulie Clemence gives a leather briefcase to you.

[About one minute later.]
You say: review
Paulie Clemence whispers to you: You have a package to deliver to Buic Kressley in the
next 98 minutes. I hope you haven't lost it ... the Don would be most upset.

This is a leather briefcase, with solid iron locks. The handle looks well worn, as if this

You need to locate and give two "good stuff" magic scrolls to your Cup 'o' Regime.

Giving eha and jpoct scrolls alone or in packets does not work.
Giving one ccc and one tpa scrolls works.
Louis Accardo whispers to you: Some of our guys know a bit of magic. Makes sense really... in our job, we see most everything. Some of them are pretty handy with it in a tight spot too. So, we need to stock up on magic scrolls for them... some good stuff that can be used in a brawl, yeah?

Louis Accardo exclaims: Ah, perfect! Just the kind of thing we need!
Louis Accardo says: We need something else, tho', you're not done quite yet. Go get us something else.

Louis Accardo whispers to you with a Genuan accent: Okay, this is how it breaks down. You're a pretty talented gal, so we'd like to make use of those talents for our organisation, yes?
Louis Accardo whispers to you with a Genuan accent: Well, one of the guys in the family is getting engaged. Nice girl, she's got huge... ah... tracts of land. Yeah. Anyway, the Don wants to give her a nice piece of jewellery as an engagement present. Something classy, capiche? Go find something for him.
Louis Accardo whispers to you with a Genuan accent: You have 3 hours.

Louis Accardo examines a holy amulet.
Louis Accardo snorts.
Louis Accardo says with a Genuan accent: This is trash! This would be an insult to give as a gift. Go bring me something worthwhile.

Louis Accardo ponders.
Louis Accardo says with a Genuan accent: Well... it's nice, but it's missing something... it doesn't say to me "I love you". Try finding something else.
