This translates into hitpoint damage which, if ignored for long enough, can eventually kill the wearer. These damage messages are approximately a minute to a minute and a half apart.
The bronze helm's hitpoint damage follows a geometric progression: it initially deals 1hp damage, then 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, and so on. The damage is almost unnoticable at first, but eventually becomes impossible to overcome.
The damage effect is stopped immediately on removing the bronze helm; when worn again it resets to its 1hp damage setting.
