Description(s)
Descriptions are example(s) from a single individual. Variations may be numerous, and dependent upon species, gender, age, location, and other variables.
Bear (near Lancre Castle)
This man sized black bear is indigenous to the Kingdom of Lancre. Thus, he seems to walk with an ungainly stoop, probably due to the fact he never gets the chance to stroll on flat land.
- Alignment: Neutral
Black Bear [adult] (Sto Plains)
A sheepish-looking black bear with a rather pointy face and the guilty shuffle that proclaims some deep racial guilt for being caught in smokehouses and chased off by little old ladies waving brooms. As most black bears can be treed by an overly-assertive cat, they're not the most dangerous of creatures - unless you threaten a female and her cubs, of course.
- Alignment: Neutral or 1 degrees evil
Black Bear [cub] (Sto Plains)
This is an incredibly cute adventurous bear cub. He just invites cuddling and petting. And you know what happens to people who try that around the mother.
- Alignment: 8-9 degrees good
Black Bear [adult] (CWC, Hublands, Lower Ramtops)
This is a large black bear, hundreds of pounds of muscle with sharp ends. This particular variety is smaller than the infamous grizzlies, and relatively friendly, unless of course one decides to attack one.
- Alignment: Neutral
Brown Bear [adult] (Sto Plains)
This is a large bear, hundreds of pounds of muscle with sharp ends. Deep brown fur that you could bury your hands in makes it look like some kind of cuddly teddy bear, until one remembers that he's got that fur so that other brown bears can't rip his throat out very well. Not the most pleasant of animals, and not the most predictable in temperament.
- Alignment: 1 degree evil
Brown Bear [cub] (Sto Plains)
This is an incredibly cute brown bear cub. He just invites cuddling and petting. And you know what happens to people who try that around the mother.
- Alignment: 8 degrees good
White Bear [adult] (CWC, Hublands, Icelands)
This animal looms, there's no other word for it. With her powerfully muscled shoulders and limbs, the great bulk of her body, her heavy box-shaped head and ponderous black-clawed paws, she looks more than capable of backing up her own opinion.
- Alignment: Neutral
Polar Bear [adult] (Hublands)
This bulky white bear is resplendent in her thick, creamy winter coat. The bulk of the long, warm fur pads out this beast's already considerable stature, accentuating the great square head and the heavy, black-clawed paws.
- Alignment: Details needed.
Grizzly [adult] (Sto Plains)
Do not cross grizzlies. They are not pleasant. While being technically just a subspecies of brown bears, their size, fierce, weaselly face and mean temperament are quite characteristic enough in all practical terms (ie, for the purposes of deciding whether to flee in terror) that they usually carry their own name.
- Alignment: Neutral or 1 degrees evil
Grizzly [adult] (Lower Ramtops, Hublands)
This is a large brown bear, hundreds of pounds of muscle with sharp ends. This particular variety is larger and much more aggressive than those found on the plains. It would be advisable to keep one's distance from her.
- Alignment: Neutral or 1 degrees evil
Hubland Bear [adult] (The Hub)
This bear has adapted to the deadly cold of the hublands by growing an enormously fluffy coat. In fact, it resembles a bear-sized ball of pure white fluff with four legs and a head. You briefly feel a surge of envy for how warm it looks.
Uses
- Hubland bear pelts can be tanned to make hubland bear fur, which Stephan requires for custom orders (hubland bear fur must be visible in your inventory).
- Hubland bear fur is a component for Wurphle's Packed Lunch, which makes a wearable container that preserves contents from decay.
Special Notes
- Black bears found in the Sto Plains areas will sometimes flee, if not accompanied by cubs.
- Beware of "adventurous bear cubs" found alone! The momma bear will come running to protect the cub if it is attacked.
- Hugging the cubs may also provoke an attack - response may depend on alignment. research If this has been marked on a page, it's because there was something that probably isn't known, that the person who edited the page thinks could be found out. Perhaps you could figure this thing out, and be famous evermore. Hugging them can make them follow you--and, while they are following you, they may "suddenly notice" your presence (or the presence of an npc in the room!), at which point the adult bear bursts out of the undergrowth and attacks. Note that the adult bear does not follow, so the cub can be simply led out of the room.
- Momma bears with cubs are sometimes aggressive.
- Grizzlies, brown bears, and polar bears are sometimes aggressive.
- Brown bears in the Morpork Mountain terrains sometimes carry picnic baskets.
- Hubland bears are much more dangerous than other bears. They can take several minutes for a group of players to kill.
- Their fur absorbs damage like armor.
- They can make players unable to move or act by sitting on them.
- Since they're found in the Hub, they're often in rooms with high background enchantment, so it can be dangerous to cast spells in the same room.
