Ankh-Morpork Job Market

From Discworld MUD Wiki

This page is about a source of missions / jobs.

The job market in Ankh-Morpork offers a variety of jobs, as per of the Patrician's Jobbes Program, as well as other services.

A Cafe sells various drinks and food in the northeast corner. It also holds Green Slab and AM Daily paper boxes. There's a lounge just south of it.

The northwest corner has an equipment shop that sells supplies that are often useful for jobs.

The southwest corner has a clothes shop, helpful for some jobs.

How the jobs work

In the room of the job giver, you can "list" the jobs, "browse" a job, "apply for" a job, "collect", and "resign job".

You cannot get a job if you are drunk: "Nobody is going to give you a job in that state. Sober up!".

Most jobs require you to get one or more items, go somewhere and do something, then return to the job giver to collect money and get awards.

The tougher jobs give more experience and money, but require having done other jobs first to apply for them. Medium and hard jobs require skills to complete and money to purchase objects, although the cost is reimbursed at the end of the job.

All jobs have a deadline which need to complete the job by. If you fail to complete the job by the deadline, you automatically get notified and are awarded XP for the work you have completed. This will be much less than a proportional fraction of what you would get by fully completing the job. You still will be fully reimbursed for the costs incurred.

After failing or resigning a job, you must wait 10 minutes before you may apply for another job.

Not all jobs are available all the time. When someone applies for a job it will be unavailable for some time that varies depending on the job.

For jobs which requires delivering items, you can ask Mr. Founder where to find an item written on your writ. He wanders in the job market.

Basic Jobs

For the jobs such as Dog Walker and Advertising Manager, make sure you type report for work when you reach the location specified by your job writ to start the job.

Advertising Manager

Are you good with people, enthusiastic and keen on working in a flexible, ethnically diverse and fast-paced work environment? Then we have the perfect job opportunity for you!
After you've made your way to [location], you will be provided with a state-of-the-art sandwich board to help you advertise the business to at least 20 people. Rich or influential potential customers are preferred so will count double towards this goal.

What happens when you report for work:

A clerk shuffles out of nowhere, takes the writ from you and hands you a
sandwich board, while muttering a barely audible "Here, wear this, go out and
advertise us to at least 20 different people, on several different streets. You
have 10 minutes to complete your task. Feel free to keep the sandwich board
when you are done, we've got plenty more where those came from."
He disappears as mysteriously as he entered, leaving you wondering how he did that.

You need to wear the board and then type advertise business to <NPC>, animals do not count.

You need to advertise to a number of people while wearing the board, usually 20 NPCs or 10 players.

In some streets you get a message that the area is already well advertised, advertising there doesn't count. You can switch to a different street to keep advertising. Just checking if the street name has changed should be fine, you don't need to move very far.

By "rich or influential potential customers", it means players.

Time available: 0:50 h to report for work, and another 0:10 h afterwards to complete the job. Reward: 24000 XP and &&&&&&&&&&&+4800 A$12.

Thirst Quencher

This job requires you to fetch a drink for someone in need.

Time available: 0:05 h. Reward: 1600 XP and &&&&&&&&&&&&+400 A$1.

Dog Walker

Many of the wealthier citizens of Ankh-Morpork (in particular Ankh) own dogs, but do not have the time, or will, to let them out themselves. Your job will be to accompany a dog while it does its thing. Don't worry about not being good with animals; these dogs are generally very tame.

An example of what happens when you report for work:

A Morporkian servant promptly arrives from inside.
The Morporkian servant says: Ah, Mortis, we've been expecting you.
The Morporkian servant takes the writ and pockets it.
The Morporkian servant says: This is our little scoundrel. Now make sure that
     he gets enough exercise, but don't start rushing him; give him enough time
     to thoroughly explore all of the surroundings.
The Morporkian servant says: Mind you, don't let him get bored either, he has a
     nasty habit to run off if he feels neglected.
The Morporkian servant says: Not to worry though, he is quite expressive and
     will let you know exactly when he gets bored or has had enough of a place.
The Morporkian servant says: Also he is quite well trained for his age, so if he
     does run away, just say follow or heel to make him behave properly again.
The Morporkian servant shuffles his feet in embarrassment.
The Morporkian servant says: When he is finished with his number one and number
     two or if he wants to go home, just bring him back here and return him.
The Morporkian servant pets the black poodle.
The Morporkian servant walks away.
A black poodle looks at you intently.
The black poodle obediently starts following you.
You report for work.
  • The locations you have to report for work are usually in the Ankh area, being able to teleport there can be an advantage for this job.
  • Pay attention to the dog, you should type protect dog just in case.
  • Usually if the dog has defecated and urinated, it is ready to go home.
  • The dog can get bored if you stay in one place and run away so you have to chase after it and then say "follow" again.
  • Keep the streets clean (bury poo)!
  • Watch out for postmen, they will attack and kill the dog. Cats and other dogs might also start a fight with the dog.
  • Remember to type return dog when it's done and you might want to wash up afterwards as it can also urinate on you.

Time available: 0:50 h to report for work. Reward: 16000 XP and &&&&&&&&&&&+3200 A$8.

Gofer

Here in the job market we regularly have requests to deliver working clothes and tools to customers in Ankh-Morpork who are too busy to come to us. This will be your job.

You have to deliver just one item from the nearby shop to some place in Ankh-Morpork.

You will be reimbursed for the item you buy and have to deliver.

Time available: 2:40 h. Reward: 6400 XP and &&&&&&&&&&&+1280 A$3.20.

Medium Jobs

Delivery Lackey

The job market runs a delivery service, where customers request items to be brought to them. Your job will be to acquire an item and deliver it to one of our customers. The items are all for sale in Ankh-Morpork, and not too expensive; afterwards, you will be reimbursed for the costs incurred.

Time available: 1:40 h. Reward: 16800 XP and &&&&&&&&&&&+3400 A$8.50.

Delivery Runner

The job market runs a delivery service, where customers request items to be brought to them. Your job will be to acquire a number of items and deliver these to some of our customers. The items are all for sale in Ankh-Morpork, and not too expensive; afterwards, you will be reimbursed for the costs incurred.

Note: since this is a responsible job, you must have some experience with delivery runs to apply. Preferably you should have successfully done "Delivery Lackey" a number of times, although "Errand Boy" and "Thirst Quencher" also count towards your record.

You have to deliver 4 types of item (with likely at least one type needing 2 items) from various places in Ankh-Morpork each to its own destination in Ankh-Morpork. If an item is too heavy you can drag it and deliver it from the ground.

Time available: 1:30 h. Reward: 57600 XP and &&&&&&&&&&+12000 A$30.

Textiles Fixer

Sometimes items get damaged in the handling, and need to be repaired before they can be sold. This will be your task. You will be given a number of items to mend, and you should do your work in the shop.

Note: since the client must trust you to handle several of their items, this job is only given to employees who have earned their first medal for the Job Market.

Bring your own sewing needle and enough thread to sew 9 to 11 items of clothing that are in really poor or even atrocious condition.

  • You can buy a needle and spools of thread in the clothing shop of the job market.
  • To avoid confusion, it's possible to get and sew each item until it says it's as good as new and then return it to the owner before picking up the next one.

A bonus of 190 in crafts.materials.needlework should be sufficient to complete the task in the allotted time, provided you have enough extra threads to compensate for multiple failed skillchecks. This job has a decent chance of TMing ca.mat.needlework and becomes easier (read: fewer failed attempts) as you gain needlework levels.

It should also be possible to use the Mend ritual to fix the clothes.

Repairs must be done on site. If you attempt to leave the store with pieces of clothing, the shopkeeper will confiscate them and place them back in the basket.

Time available: 0:50 h. Reward: 25200 XP and &&&&&&&&&&&+5200 A$13.

Sett Maker

Stephen Jobbes, a vendor in the Job Market, requires delivery of paving setts to resell in his shop. Your job will be to gather natural mineral rocks and shape them into setts and deliver these to Stephen Jobbes.

Shaping stones or rocks into setts requires a hammer (available from Stephen Jobbes) and some crafts.arts.sculpture skills. A 180 bonus seems to be enough to succeed often, sometimes producing a symmetrical or well-formed sett. 137 was enough to produce roughly rectangular setts most of the time. The quality of the setts has no influence on the reward.

Setts can be shaped from rocks or stones made of granite, flint, limestone, rosy-quartz and cinnabar. Shaping only works while the job is active.

Setts cannot be made from pebbles (too small) or from rocks or stones that are (and can be referred to as) coals, slates, chalks, sulphurs (too soft).

Time available: 1:40 h. Reward: 20480 XP and &&&&&&&&&&&+4080 A$10.20.

Street Fixer

Due to wear and tear on the roads, there are always places in Ankh-Morpork where the street needs fixing. Your job will be to lay a number of cobbles on a broken piece of street. You will need some designing skills to do this properly.

This requires at least level 50 crafts.arts.design to be effective  research If this has been marked on a page, it's because there was something that probably isn't known, that the person who edited the page thinks could be found out. Perhaps you could figure this thing out, and be famous evermore. . You only need to repair one location for this job, with an amount of cobbles or setts that's mentioned on the writ.

The reward scales linearly with the fraction of pavers placed correctly (not shoddy, faulty, or sketchy). For example, if you place 1 of 2 pavers correctly, you get 9600 XP and &&&&&&&&&&&+2000 A$5.00; if you place 1 of 3 pavers correctly, you get 6336 XP and &&&&&&&&&&&+1280 A$3.20.

A bonus of 132 is enough to be reasonably profitable (regularly get full reward and TM quickly - see research). A lower bonus may be feasible but more   research If this has been marked on a page, it's because there was something that probably isn't known, that the person who edited the page thinks could be found out. Perhaps you could figure this thing out, and be famous evermore.  is needed.

Prying out a sett or cobble does not consume guild points. Placing a sett or cobble consumes 50 guild points.

Time available: 1:40 h. Maximum reward: 19200 XP and &&&&&&&&&&&+3800 A$9.50.

Full-time Street Repairer

Due to wear and tear on the roads, there are always places in Ankh-Morpork where the street needs fixing. We are looking for someone who is willing to visit a number of these places in one go, and repair them. A minor bit of expertise is expected, since, in some places, the cobbles are laid out in a particular pattern, which should be respected.

Note: in this job, you are assigned several streets, so we prefer employees who aren't going to mess this up. To apply, you must therefore have proven yourself with single street repairs (Street Fixer) a number of times.

This requires some crafts.arts.design skills. The list comprises of six locations around AM, with two to four cobbles or setts each to be replaced.

Reward structure is identical to Street Fixer but required bonus is significantly higher; see research. At 145 bonus, for example, the reward was similar to Street Fixer (~20000 XP) but the job took 6x as long. At 171 bonus, 14/19 were placed successfully, yielding ~43k XP.

Time available: 1:40 h. Maximum reward: 59200 XP and &&&&&&&&&&+12000 A$30.00.

Hard Jobs

Expert Street Maintenance Technician

Due to wear and tear on the roads, there are always places in Ankh-Morpork where the street needs fixing. In some places, this takes a lot of skill to repair, because of the way the patterns in the road are laid out. Most of our employees are not so skilled, so if you accept this job, you will be responsible for the reparation of a large number of streets.

Note: as this job requires significant skill and a good work ethic, we only accept applications from experienced workers. Preferably, you have done "Full-time Street Repairer" a number of times, although "Street Fixer" also counts towards your record.

You need to repair the street in 10 locations around AM, each requiring replacement of two to five cobbles or setts.

The xp and money you get is dependent on how well you do your job. You can see how well you have done by the message you get after placing each sett or cobble:

You finish placing the sett and step back to look at your work.

You finish placing the sett and step back to look at your sketchy/shoddy/faulty work.

With a bonus in crafts.art.design of a little over 200 you can expect 40-80k xp and A$15-25. With around 250 bonus this should go up to 100-160k xp and A$35-50.

Time available: 3:00 h. Maximum reward: 188000 XP and &&&&&&&&&&+38000 A$95.

Deliverer of Rare Items

The job market runs a delivery service, where customers request items to be brought to them. Sometimes these items are of a certain nature that makes them hard to find in shops. Your job will be to find such an item and bring it to the customer. Be prepared to employ arcane arts to travel, and to negotiate directly with people rather than buying the item in a shop.

Note: since this job requires both some know-how of the world and persuasiveness in acquiring the items, you must have significant experience with delivery runs to apply. Preferably you should have successfully done "Delivery Runner" a few times, although the lesser delivery jobs will also count towards your record.

You have to deliver one item from somewhere across the Disc to a destination in Ankh-Morpork.

Time available: 2:30 h. Reward: 72000 XP and &&&&&&&&&&+14000 A$35.

Deliverer of Foreign Goods

The job market runs a delivery service, where customers request items to be brought to them. Your job will be to acquire a number of items and deliver these to some of our customers. Some of these items may be rare in these parts, so be prepared to employ arcane arts to travel. They may also be quite expensive, although you will of course be reimbursed for the costs incurred afterwards.

Note: since this is a responsible job, and requires quite some know-how of the world, you must have significant experience with delivery runs to apply. Preferably you should have successfully done either "Delivery Runner" or "Deliverer of Rare Items" a number of times, although the lesser delivery jobs will also count towards your record.

You have to deliver 4 types of item from all across the Disc each to its destination in Ankh-Morpork. If you do not know where to find them you can ask Mr Founder.

Time available: 5:00 h. Reward: 152720 XP and &&&&&&&&&&+30000 A$75.

wheel. This medal is only given out to those who have shown great diligence in their work.
It is in excellent condition.

The medal of greatest honour looks like:

above a wagon wheel. To earn this medal means to have shown great service to the city of Ankh-Morpork
and its denizens, by way of continued hard work.
It is in excellent condition.

Tips

Some job writs have multiple steps which can be individually checked off to keep track of your progress.

To do this you must have a quill and use "check item X" or "check item X partially" where "X" is the number of the item in the writ, e.g. "check item 1".

"syntax check" for more details.
